Install MSC Adams (Student version)

• https://hexagon.com/products/adams-student-edition
• Usually takes 2-3 days for approval from Hexagon.
• Download and install Adams View.
• You will be using the Adams View from the entire installation.
• Documentation
CAD
• ADAMS is not CAD-friendly.
• Prepare CAD in any CAD modeling software and save it in *.igs, *.iges
format.
• Prepare the complete assembly in the CAD software itself.
• Import to ADAMS.
• Joints will not be imported.
• Joints will be imported only with Solidworks models. For students
using Solidworks
Using ADAMS
• Select a working directory and create a new model.
• Import the CAD from File > Change File Type to *.igs, *.iges > Double
click on the ‘File to read’ bar > Select the file > Change ‘Part name’ to
‘Model name’ > Double click on the blank > Select the model name >
Click on Import.
Using ADAMS
• For dynamic simulation, define part properties by using the modify
command/double click on each part from the model tree.
• For dynamic simulation, set gravity (Settings > Gravity).
• Use ‘R’ to rotate, ‘T’ to translate, ‘S’ to spin, and ‘Z’ to zoom.
Using ADAMS
• Add joints at appropriate locations from the ‘Connectors’ tab.
• Add forces or motions from the ‘Forces’ or ‘Motions’ tabs.
Simulating ADAMS
• Select from the ‘Simulation’ tab.
• Click on reset before simulation.
• Fill in the duration and step size for the simulation.
Exporting data from ADAMS
• Go to the ‘Results’ tab and select ‘Postprocessing’ to view simulation data.
• Select ‘Objects’ from the Source.
• Select ‘body’, ‘force’ or ‘constraint’ from the ‘Filter’ and select the required
‘Object’ and ‘Component’ to plot the data.

• Select to add and to delete plots.


Exporting data from ADAMS
• Select File > Export > Table to export data.
• Select the spreadsheet from the ‘Format’ and type the filename with
the appropriate extension (.csv, .txt, etc).
• Double-click on the plot blank to select the plot from which data
needs to be exported
• Click on ‘Apply’ to export to the working directory
