Statistical Methods Question Bank Unit 3

The document outlines various statistical problems related to binomial and normal distributions, including probability calculations for student exam pass rates and retail shop survival rates. It also covers hypothesis testing methods such as T-tests, ANOVA, and non-parametric tests, with examples involving yield comparisons and exam score variances. Additionally, it discusses the significance of protein diet effects on serum albumin levels among patients.

 Problems Based On Binomial Distribution

A. It is observed that ,if students works hard then chances of passing a exam is
very high i.e. 80%.A random sample of such 10 students were selected .
what is the chance that (i) no student will pass the exam (ii) 3 student will
pass the exam (iii)More than or equal to 8 students will pass the exam (iv) all
of them will pass the exam
B. Vijay has started a new retail shop in mid market .In market there is business
competition. Therefore survival of a new outlet is very rare chance that is
almost 5%.Vijay has started such 7 new retail outlets. Find out the probability
that (i)at least 3 shops will survive (ii) exactly 5 shops will survive
C. Chances of mumbai university clears UPSC exam is 70%.If 20 students
appear for the exam. What is the chance that more than 3 students will clear
the exam.
D. The mean and variance of a binomial distribution are 12 and 6. Find (i)P(X=0)
(ii)P(X>=1)
E. Six dice are thrown 720 times.how many times do you expect atleast 3 dice to
show a 4 or 6 ?

2. Problems Based On Normal Distribution

A. The lion population in gir national park is approximately normally distributed with
mean μ =4400 lion and standard deviation σ=620 lion .convert each of the following x
intervals into z interval and find the associated probability (a) more than 3300 (b)
less than 5400 © between 3500 and 4400
B. A survey of height of indian men was conducted .Heights are normally distributed
with a mean μ =69.6 and standard deviation σ=3.0.A study participant is selected
randomly.
(a)Find the probability that the height is less than 66 inches.
 (b) Find the probability that the height is between 66 and 72 inches
 (c) Find the probability that the height is more than 72 inches

The manufacturing of rubber chemicals by a batch process , has a normal
yield of 690 lbs per batch. A new process is tried experimentally on 12
batches with the following yields :
620 ,590, 660, 620, 700,710,690,720,700,690,720 and 650 lbs. Is the yield of
the new process a significantly different from that of the old process ? (level of
significance 0.01)

T Test for difference of means

In a factory ,there is packing machine which packs jar in cartons. It is
considered that a new machine will pack faster on the average than the
machine currently used . To test this hypothesis ,the time it take to psck 10
cartons are recorded.Following table gives the time to pack cartons by both
the machines

Old machine 42.1 41.3 42.4 43.2 41.8 41.0 41.8 42.8 42.3 42.7

New Machine 42.7 43.8 42.5 43.1 44.0 43.6 43.3 43.5 41.7 44.2
Does the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that on the average
,the new machine packs faster > perform the required hypothesis test at the
5% level of significance

A professor in accounting department of business scholl claims that there is much more
variability in final score of exam of students taking the introductory accounting course who
are not majoring in accounting.Random samples of 13 non accounting majors and 10
accounting majors are taken from the professors class roster in his large lecture , and the
following results are computed based on the final exam scores:
Non accounting : n1=13 and S^2 =210.2
Accounting : n2=10 and S^2 =36.5
AT 0.05 level of significance , is there evidence to support professors claim ?

Suppose the state government wants to examine the safety of compact cars, medium
cars and big cars.It collects a sample of three for each of the treatments (cars types).
Using the hypothetical data provided below ,test whether the mean pressure applied
to the drivers head during a crash test is equal for each type of car. Use =5%

A professor of computer science college in mumbai university observed that the

students are very brilliant but they of proper writing in university examination. He
recorded that number of mistakes done by students , then he gave training of proper
writing (treatment) and recorded the number of mistakes done by same students
again.
Following is the data recorded

Student No. of errors before No. of errors after 1

treatment month of treatment

1 95 85

2 70 50

3 40 50

4 65 40

5 80 20

6 75 65

8 20 25
By observing the above table what would one conclude , is there a significant
difference ?
