Scientists have dreamed for a long time about building a 'flying train' which can float through the air
above the tracks. With Maglev technology, their dreams are now a reality. Maglev trains have no
wheels. Instead, powerful magnets lift them into the air and push them forward, at speeds of up to 500
km per hour.
As well as speed, Maglev has a number of advantages over other transport systems. The trains are
quieter and the journey is smoother because they don't have wheels. They are also greener because they
don't use fuel and so create less pollution. Right now there is only one high-speed Maglev train system
in the world. It carries passengers from Shanghai city centre to the airport. However, work has started
on a new, longer Maglev track in Japan. Trains will go from Tokyo to Nagoya in 40 minutes. But don't
expect to ride on it on your next trip to Japan. It won't open until 2027! Then, in 2045, the line will
extend to Osaka.
There is one major problem with Maglev technology: it is incredibly expensive to build the tracks.
Transport planners predict that the Tokyo to Osaka line will cost 91 billion dollars. The high cost means
that Maglev technology probably won't replace other forms of transport in the near future. However, the
technology is still in development and somebody might find a cheaper and simpler way to build the
tracks. And then, who knows? In the future, some of us might fly to work by train.

The traditional path of education through textbooks and degrees is undergoing a dramatic
transformation. As industries evolve at an unprecedented pace, employers are increasingly valuing
specific skills over conventional academic credentials. This shift has given rise to micro-credentials,
which offer focused, skill-based learning experiences that can be completed in weeks or months rather
than years.
The emergence of tech labs and digital learning platforms has revolutionized how people acquire
new skills. These innovative spaces provide hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies,
allowing learners to gain practical expertise in specific areas. Unlike traditional classrooms, tech labs
emphasize real-world application and project-based learning, making them particularly attractive to
both career changers and industry professionals seeking to upgrade their skills.
Many organizations now recognize micro-credentials as valuable indicators of competency.
These credentials, which range from coding bootcamp certificates to specialized industry certifications,
demonstrate practical skills that are immediately applicable in the workplace. This recognition has led
to a surge in demand for short-term, intensive training programs that focus on specific technical or
professional capabilities.
The future of education appears to be moving towards a hybrid model that combines traditional
academic knowledge with practical, skill-based learning. This approach allows learners to build their
expertise incrementally while maintaining the flexibility to adapt to changing industry demands. As
technology continues to advance, the importance of continuous learning and skill updating will only
grow stronger.
Question 26: Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a benefit of micro-credentials?

A team of social psychologists from California has spent six years studying the reactions of
people in cities around the world to different situations. The results show that cities where people have
less money generally have friendlier populations. Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, which is often known for its
crime, comes out top, Vientiane ranks second, and the capital of Malawi, Lilongwe, comes third.
But what makes one city friendlier than another? The psychologists from California State
University say it has got more to do with environment than culture or nationality. They carried out a
study into the way locals treated strangers in 23 cities around the world. The team conducted their
research through a series of tests, where they dropped pens or pretended, they were blind and needed
help crossing the street.
The study concludes that people are more helpful in cities with a more relaxed way of life such
as Rio. While they were there, researchers received help in 93 percent of cases, and the percentage in
Lilongwe was only a little lower. However, richer cities such as Amsterdam and New York are
considered the least friendly. Inhabitants of Amsterdam helped the researchers in 53 percent of cases
and in New York just 44 percent. The psychologists found that, in these cities, people tend to be short of
time, so they hurry and often ignore strangers.

Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question:
Different relationships affect teenagers in various ways. Friends impact teenagers almost the same
amount as their parents. Teenagers go to their friends for help or to ask questions that they could not ask
their parents about. Most of the time their friends give them good advice. In most cases they tell their
friends how to dress and act when being around certain people.
Love relationship just makes it even harder for a teenager to get a good education. Some start to fail
in school because they are hanging out with their boyfriend or girlfriend instead of doing their work.
Parents have a big influence on teenagers because their children look up to them and the majority of
them grow up to ask and do things just like their parents did with them. Children who have experienced
a family break-up may have lower achievements than children brought up in an intact family.
As previously stated, teenagers are affected by many relationships which involved their friends,
family, and their love relationships. The relationships affect them so much that most teenagers change
their ideas about how they should live their lives in a different way and to change their future goals.
They should be influenced to help themselves and to help others.

Making the leap from school to university
Getting into university is an important event for young people. While most students are excited
about it, they should also be aware of the difference between university and school.
At school, most of your learning is done in the classroom. Teachers give you regular
assignments and provide support and resources to help you complete them. Meanwhile, most of your
learning at university involves self-studying and project work that you need to plan and complete by a
certain date. It is your responsibility to review lecture notes, read textbooks, and do research to find
information in the library or online.
Your relationships at school are often limited to schoolmates or classmates. You interact with
them mostly in a school environment; therefore, your group of friends is small and very familiar. By
contrast, at university, you not only have more contacts, but you also meet people from different
backgrounds. Therefore, you need better social skills to deal with any conflict you may come into when
interacting with other people.
As a secondary school student, you also live with your parents who provide you with the daily
care and support you need. You don’t have to worry about things such as shopping or cooking for
yourself. You have your parents take care of your physical and mental well-being. Once you go to
university, you will probably move away from home and start to live independently. You need to
improve your life skills so that you can manage your own life.

and reptiles).
Traditional medicine in Viet Nam and China represents a threat to a wide variety of species, but
most notably the pangolin, which is the most trafficked animal on the planet. Sadly, the use of
endangered species in medicine shows little sign of decrease. Whereas celebrities have campaigned for
species that are targeted for status and ornamentation, such as elephant ivory, many other animals and
plants have failed to get the attention needed to prevent over-exploitation. And a number are now facing
extinction.
The pet and zoo trade in wildlife, especially for reptiles and birds, have recently received
attention, as many species formerly thought to be captive-bred are now known to be wild-caught. They
have suffered serious population declines as a result of exploitation for trade.

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational training
programme. Such programmes offer plenty of opportunity for on-the-job training and work experience.
Programmes usually last between two and three and a half years and comprise theoretical as well as
practical elements. You will spend one or two days a week, or several weeks at once, at a vocational
school where you will acquire the theoretical knowledge that you will need in your future occupation.
The rest of the time will be spent at a company. There you get to apply your newly acquired knowledge
in practice, for example by learning to operate machinery. You will get to know what your company
does, learn how it operates and find out if you can see yourself working there after completing your
training.
This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job: by the time you have
completed your training, you will not only have the required technical knowledge, but you will also
have hands-on experience in your job. There are around 350 officially recognised training programmes
in Germany, so chances are good that one of them will suit your interests and talents. You can find out
which one that might be by visiting one of the jobs and vocational training fairs which are organised in
many German cities at different times in the year.
Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training programme are very
good. This is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very popular with young Germans: around

Many young people strive to be independent. That means you are able to take care of yourself, and
you don't have to rely on anyone else. However, to live independently, you need a number of life skills
in order not to depend on your parents and older brothers or sisters. One of the most important skills is
time management which can help you build your confidence and self-esteem. With good time
management skills, you can perform your daily tasks, including your responsibilities at school and at
home with pleasing results. Moreover, you will not feel stressed when exam dates are approaching.
These skills can also help you act more independently and responsibly, get better grades at school and
have more time for your family and friends.
Developing time-management skills is not as challenging as you may think. Firstly, make a plan for
things you need to do, including appointments and deadlines. Using a diary or apps on mobile devices
will remind you of what you need to accomplish and when you need to accomplish it. Secondly,
prioritize your activities. You need to decide which tasks are the most urgent and important and then,
concentrate on these first. This way, you may not be at a loss to deal with too much work at the same
time. Thirdly, develop routines because routines, when established, take less time for you to do your

World Heritage Sites are locations that are considered to be of great cultural, historical, or
natural importance. These sites are recognized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization) for their exceptional value to humanity. Some famous examples include the
Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, and the historic city of Venice. These sites provide a
unique window into the past and offer insights into the diversity of human cultures and the natural
world.
However, many World Heritage Sites are under threat. Natural disasters, such as floods and
earthquakes, as well as climate change, are causing serious damage to these sites. For instance, rising
sea levels are threatening coastal locations like Venice, while warmer ocean temperatures are causing
coral reefs to bleach and die. Human activities, including tourism, deforestation, and pollution, also
pose significant risks. Over-tourism can lead to overcrowding, which damages monuments and natural
habitats, while pollution can erode structures and harm ecosystems.
To protect these valuable sites, UNESCO and local governments work together to create
preservation strategies. These strategies may involve limiting the number of visitors, restoring damaged
areas, and implementing stronger laws to prevent further damage. Education is also a key part of
preservation efforts, as it helps raise awareness about the importance of protecting these sites. By
preserving World Heritage Sites, we ensure that future generations can experience and learn from t hem,
while also helping to maintain biodiversity and historical knowledge.

Climate change has affected fauna and flora all over the world, but some species are more
endangered than others. Polar animals, whose icy habitat is melting in the warmer temperatures, are
particularly at risk. In fact, studies show that the Arctic sea ice is melting faster than ever! Polar bears
and seals need sea ice as places to raise their young, feed, or rest.
Rising sea levels threaten the habitats of sea turtles, which depend on beaches to lay their eggs.
Many people may not know that the temperature of nests determines whether the eggs are male or
female. Unfortunately, rising temperatures mean that most turtles will be born females, and this may
lead to population decline.
Climate change does not only have an impact on wildlife, it is affecting us, too. Farmers,
especially in developing countries, are the most affected. They are dealing with higher temperatures,
heavier rainfall, floods, and droughts. Environmental conditions can also affect plant growth and crop
quality. For example, in Kenya, because of climate change, rainfall is becoming heavier and less
predictable. Droughts are often followed by large amounts of rain, which makes growing tea, Kenya’s
most important crop, very difficult.

Today we hear more and more about the importance of getting enough sleep. Sleep can give energy
to both our bodies and our brains. It can also affect our feelings, behaviour, and memory.
Studies have shown that people in some countries spend less time sleeping and more time working.
But our bodies cannot work well without enough sleep. Losing just one or two hours of sleep a night,
over a long period of time, can badly affect our health. We cannot work for many hours; we can get
angry easily; and we can even lose our IQ points. That explains why, without enough sleep,
an intelligent person may have difficulty doing daily tasks.
Studies have also shown that the time of year seems to affect how much sleep we need. People
usually sleep longer in the winter, sometimes as much as 14 hours a night. However, in the
summer, they sometimes sleep as little as six hours, without having any problems.
