Control Ass 1

A control system manages the behavior of devices to achieve specific goals through control loops. Feedback is crucial as it monitors output, compares it to the desired value, and adjusts inputs accordingly. Open loop systems operate without feedback, while closed loop systems use feedback to modify operations, exemplified by an electric fan and an air conditioning system, respectively.

1) What is a Control System?

A control system is defined as a system of devices that manages, commands,

directs, or regulates the behavior of other devices or systems to achieve a
specific goal. This is accomplished through control loops that involves a
series of interconnected components that collaborate to produce the desired
output by regulating input variables.

2) What is the purpose of feedback in a control system?

Feedback in a control system involves constantly monitoring the system's

output and comparing it to the desired or set point. The difference between the
actual output and the desired output is known as the error signal. This error is
then used to make adjustments to the system's input, ensuring the output
moves closer to the desired value.

3) What is the difference between an open loop and closed loop control system?

An open loop control system is one in which the control action is not
dependent on the system's output. It operates without feedback, meaning the
output is not compared to the desired input to adjust the system's operation.
An example of an open loop control system is the electric fan speed control.

On the other hand, a closed loop control system relies on feedback to adjust
the system's operation based on the output. In this type of system, the control
action is continually modified by comparing the actual output to the desired
output. A common example is an air conditioning system, where a thermostat
measures the room temperature and compares it to the desired temperature.
4) Give one example each of open and closed loop control system. Provide a
simple illustration and block diagram of each example.
