Questions On Pressure Distribution
Questions On Pressure Distribution
1. Because of a leak in a buried gasoline storage tank, water has seeped in to the depth shown in the figure
below. The specific gravity of the gasoline is 0.68. Determine the pressure at the gasoline–water interface
and at the bottom of the tank. Express the pressure in units of N/m2, and as a pressure head in m of water.
2. A closed tank contains compressed air and oil (SG = 0.90) as is shown in the following figure. A U-tube
manometer using mercury (SG = 13.6) is connected to the tank as shown. The column heights are h1 = 0.914
m; h2 = 0.152 m; and h3 = 0.228 m. Determine the pressure gage reading in Pa.
3. The 4-m-diameter circular gate is located in the inclined wall of a large reservoir containing water The gate
is mounted on a shaft along its horizontal diameter, and the water depth is 10 m above the shaft. Determine
the magnitude and location of the resultant force exerted on the gate by the water.
4. A U-tube mercury manometer is connected to a closed pressurized tank as illustrated in the following figure.
If the air pressure is 2 psi, determine the differential reading, h. The specific weight of the air is negligible.
5. A 3-m-wide, 8-m-high rectangular gate is located at the end of a rectangular passage that is connected to a
large open tank filled with water as shown in Figure below. The gate is hinged at its bottom and held closed
by a horizontal force, FH, located at the centre of the gate. The maximum value for FH is 3500 kN. (a)
Determine the maximum water depth, h, above the centre of the gate that can exist without the gate opening.
(b) Is the answer the same if the gate is hinged at the top? Explain your answer.
