From the Unit Outline:

For this critical essay you will need to choose ONE of the following essay
statements or questions for your assessment.

The Panopticon, a conceptual prison design where prisoners are aware of

potential surveillance but cannot determine the exact timing, is considered to
be the ultimate tool for social control. It operates by compelling individuals
to modify their behaviors in accordance with societal norms due to the
constant threat of being watched at all times (Foucault, 1977). Evaluate the
ethical considerations of the Panopticon model when applied to
contemporary online surveillance by governments. How does this concept

Structure, Writing, and Referencing

A good essay will be well structured with a clear introduction, body, and
conclusion. This may require multiple drafts, so plan and start early. “Stream of
consciousness” pieces (where you attempt to write your essay from start to finish
in one sitting) should be avoided. These tend to be weak in structure and
frequently wander off topic.

This is a formal academic essay, so pay close attention to your use of language,
spelling, and grammar. While the use of personal pronouns is not expressly
forbidden, they should be avoided as far as possible.
