Assignment-2- Design Of Coupling

1 Explain different types of Coupling?

2 Write note on Muff and Clamp coupling?

4 It is required to design a split muff coupling to transmit 50 kW power at 120 rpm The shafts,
key and clamping bolts are made of plain carbon steel 30C8 (Syt = 400 N/mm²). The yield
strength in compression is 150% of the tensile yield strength. The factor of safety for shafts,
key and bolts is 5. The number of clamping bolts is 8. The coefficient of friction between
sleeve halves and the shaft is 0.3.

5 A rigid coupling is used to transmit 20 kW power at 720 rpm. There are four bolts and the
pitch circle diameter of the bolts is 125 mm. The bolts are made of steel 45C8 (Syt = 380
N/mm²) and the factor of safety is 3. Determine the diameter of the bolts. Assume that the
bolts are finger tight in reamed and ground holes.

4 A helical compression spring made of oil tempered carbon steel is subjected to a


fluctuating load from 400 N to 1000 N. The spring index is 6 and the design factor of
safety is 1.25. If the yield stress in shear is 770 MPa and endurance stress in shear is 350
MPa, Find: 1. Size of the spring wire, 2. Diameters of the spring, 3. Number of turns of
the spring, and 4. Free length of the spring. The compression of the spring at the maximum
load is 30 mm. For spring material, the modulus of rigidity is 80 KN/mm2. Spring ends
are square and ground.

5 Design a helical compression spring from the following data:


Minimum load = 100 N, Maximum load = 225.6 N, Compression of spring = 10 mm,
Permissible shear stress for spring material = 440 MPa Spring end – square and ground
ends Modulus of rigidity for spring material = 0.80 x 105 MPa.

6 A semi-elliptic leaf spring consists of two extra full-length leaves and eight graduated
length leaves, including the master leaf. The center-to-center distance between the two
eyes of the spring is 1 m. The maximum force acting on the spring is 10 kN and the width
of the leaf is 50 mm. The spring is initially preloaded in such a way that when the load is
maximum, the stresses induced in all the leaves are equal to 350 N/mm2. The modulus of
elasticity of the leaf material is 2.07x105 N/mm2. Determine: (i) The thickness of leaves.
(ii) The deflection of the spring at maximum load.

1 State the different equations used for the design of thick cylinder subjected to
internal pressure based on materials and end conditions.

2 Explain the different types of end covers of used in pressure vessels.

3 Derive the Lame’s equation for thick cylinder

4 Explain Clavarino’s and Birnie’s equation in detail.

5 Explain Area compensations for nozzles and also explain autofrettage for
cylinders.
6 A high pressure cylinder consists of steel tube with 20 mm and 40 mm as inner
and outer diameter respectively. It is jacketed by outer steel tube with 60 mm
outer diameter. The tubes are assembled by shrinking process in such a way that
the maximum principal tensile stress in any tube is restricted to 100 N/mm2. Find
the shrinkage pressure and original dimension of the tube. Also plot distribution
of stresses due to shrink fit. Take E = 207 KN/mm2

4 A deep groove ball bearing has a rated static and dynamic load capacity of 4150 N
and 4750 N respectively. The bearing has to take an axial load of 2075 N and a
radial load of 4000 N. Find the expected life of the bearing?

5 Single row deep groove ball bearing 6010 is subjected to an axial trust of 1200N
and radial load 2400 N. Find the expected life that 50% of the bearing will complete
under this condition. CO= 13200 N, C = 21600 N

6 A ball bearing is operating on a work cycle consisting of three parts:

- a radial load of 3000 N at 1440 rpm for one quarter cycle,

- a radial load of 5000 N at 720 rpm for one half cycle and

- a radial load of 2500 N at 1440 rpm for remaining cycle.

The expected life of the bearing is 10000 hours. Calculate the dynamic load carrying
capacity of the bearing.

7 A ball bearing, subjected to a radial load of 5 KN, is expected to have a life of 8000
hrs at 1450 rpm with a reliability of 99%. Calculate the dynamic load capacity of
bearing, so that it can be selected from manufacturer’s catalogue based on a
reliability of 90%.

viscosity of lubricant = 20 cP. For the above calculated load, find the power
lost in friction.

6 A foot step bearing supports a shaft of 100 mm diameter which is counter


bored at the end with a hole diameter of 50 mm. The bearing pressure is
limited to 1 N/mm2. The speed of shaft is 100 rpm. Assume μ = 0.015. Find
(i) the load to be supported (ii) the power lost in friction (iii) the heat
generated in bearing

7 A 360º full journal bearing operates under the following specifications:

Journal Diameter = 70 mm, bearing length = 70 mm, Journal speed = 960


rpm, steady radial load = 12 KN, Viscosity of lubricant = 16 Cp, Mass density
of oil = 880 kg/m3, Specific heat = 1.76 kJ/kg ºC, bearing clearance ratio (r/c)
= 800, Average heat transfer coefficient = 20 W/m2-ºC. Determine the
required flow rate of oil. Also find the temperature of oil film and the bearing
surface area for the desired heat transfer, if the ambient temperature is 300
ºC. Assume that all heat generated in the bearing is carried away by the oil.

Worm)

1 Explain different types of gear tooth failures, causes and their possible remedies.

2 Give classification of gears and discuss different types of failure in gear design.

3 Explain interference and undercutting in involute gear tooth profile.

7 Design a pair of straight teeth spur gears to transmit 20 kW when the pinion rotates at 300 r.p.m.
The velocity ratio is 1 : 3. The allowable static stresses for the pinion and gear materials are 120
MPa and 100 MPa respectively. The pinion has 15 teeth and its face width is 14 times the
module. Assume steady load condition and 8-10 hours of service per day. Take, the tooth form
factor, y = 0.154 − ( 0.912 / No. of teeth ); and the velocity factor, Cv = 3 / ( 3 + v ).

8 Design a helical gear to transmit 30 kW from the following data; Helix angle = 300, Speed of
pinion = 1500 rpm, Pressure angle = 200 FDI, Velocity ratio = 4, No of teeth on pinion = 24,
Static stress for CI = 55 N/mm2, BHN for pinion and gear material = 350, Young’s modulus of
elasticity for pinion and gear material = 2.1 * 105 N/ mm2

9 A pair of spur gears consists of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 120 teeth gear. The module is
4 mm. calculate (i) the center distance, (ii) the pitch circle diameter of the pinion and gear, (iii)
the addendum and dedendum, (iv) the tooth thickness, (v) the bottom clearance, and (vi) the
gear ratio.

10 A worm drive transmits 15 kW at 2000 rpm to a machine carriage at 75 rpm. The worm is triple
threaded and has 65 mm pitch diameter. The worm gear has 90 teeth of 6 mm module. The
tooth form is to be 200 full depth involute. The coefficient of friction between the mating teeth
may be taken as 0.10. Calculate: 1. Tangential force acting on the worm 2. Axial thrust and
separating force on worm 3. Efficiency of the worm drive.

Assignment-8-Speed Gear Box

1 List the major advantages of using geometric progression of for speed regulation in a
gear box.

2 Differentiate between Arithmetic, Geometric and Harmonic Progressions in case of


design of gear box.

3 Draw layout diagram of gear box, ray diagram and speed chart for a multispeed gear
box of a radial drilling machine required to give eight steps. The power from motor to
the input shaft of gear box is transmitted by a V-belt drive with a speed reduction of 1:6.
The minimum and maximum spindle speeds are 70 rpm and 1800 rpm respectively.

4 What are the major advantages of using geometric progression of for speed regulation
in a gear box?. And explain the design procedure of 8-speed gear box for machine tool
application with the assumption of suitable and necessary data.

5 Draw the structure diagrams for the following equations of a six speed gear box.
(i) z = 2(1) 3(2) (ii) z = 2(3) 3(1) Draw the schematic arrangement of the gears for the
above equations.

Assignment-9-Design Of Mechanisms

1 Explain the classification cranes using different standards.

2 Write advantages of wire rope. Draw cross section of 7,19 and 37 wires in strand of wire
rope.

3 Explain different types of stresses in wire rope design.

4 The following specification refers to EOT crane: Application: class-II Load to be lifted:
120 kN Hoisting speed: 5m/min Maximum lift: 15m Design a Hook.

5 A crane is lifting a load of 25 kN through a wire rope and a hook. The weight of hook,
etc. is 15 kN. The rope drum diameter may be taken as 3 times the diameter of the rope.
The load is to be lifted with an acceleration of 1 m/s2. Calculate the diameter of the wire
rope. Take f.o.s. of 6 and Young’s modulus for the wire rope 80 kN/mm2. The ultimate
stress may be taken as 1800 Mpa. The cross-sectional area of the wire rope may be taken
as 0.38 times the square of the wire rope diameter.

6 Design an exhaust valve for a horizontal diesel engine using the following data:

Cylinder bore = 150 mm, Length of stroke = 275 mm, Engine speed = 500 rpm,
Maximum gas pressure = 3.5 MPa, Seat angle = 45° Calculate:(i) diameter of the valve
port;(ii) diameter of the valve head;(iii) thickness of the valve head;(iv) diameter of the
valve stem; and (v) maximum lift of the valve.
