INTRODUCTION:
In today’s world, technology is constantly evolving and making our lives easier. One area where these
advancements have made significant progress is in the automotive industry. Enter Advanced Driver-
Assistance Systems (ADAS), the futuristic technology that promises to automate driving. Imagine a car
that not only alerts you to potential hazards but also takes actions to prevent accidents. That’s exactly
what ADAS does. From lane departure warnings and automatic braking to adaptive cruise control and
blind spot detection, this technology enhances driver safety and assists in avoiding collisions. ADAS
uses a network of sensors, cameras, and radars to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings and gather real-
time data. This data is then analysed to provide valuable insights to the driver, helping them make better-
informed decisions on the road. With autonomous vehicles on the horizon, ADAS is becoming
increasingly common in new vehicles. It not only improves the driving experience but also serves as a
stepping stone towards a future of fully autonomous transportation. In this report, we’ll explore the ins
and outs of ADAS, its various components, and the benefits it brings to the table. So buckle up and get
ready to dive into the world of cutting-edge automotive technology. ADAS full form stands for
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. It’s a suite of electronic functions designed to improve safety of
the driver, the passenger and the pedestrian. The aim is to first minimise and then altogether eliminate
accidents on the road. A simple sensor that beeps near an object, or a car that allows hands off parking,
are all levels of ADAS, that are currently taking on some of the drivers’ responsibilities. This is leading
to what one hopes is a completely autonomous car which requires no driver input whatsoever. Advanced
driver assistance systems (ADAS) can be defined as digital technologies that help drivers in routine
navigation and parking without fully automating the entire process but instead leveraging computer
networks to enable more data-driven and safer driving experiences.
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are technical elements that improve car safety. According
to Logis Fleet, when correctly built, these devices leverage a human-machine interface to increase the
driver’s potential to adapt to road hazards. These devices improve safety and response times to possible
threats through early warning and automated systems. Some of these systems are integrated into
automobiles as standard parts, while manufacturers can add aftermarket elements and even entire
systems afterward to customize the vehicle for the operator. Nearly all automobile collisions are caused
by human error. One may prevent this by employing modern driver aid technologies (ADAS). ADAS
aims to minimize the incidence and severity of automotive accidents that one cannot avert to prevent
deaths and injuries. These devices can give important data about traffic, road closures and blockages,
congestion levels, advised routes to avoid traffic, etc. One can also use such systems to detect human
driver weariness and distraction and issue cautionary signals to analyse driving performance and offer
recommendations. These devices may take over control from humans on identifying danger, performing
simple tasks (like cruise control), or challenging manoeuvres (like overtaking and parking). Nowadays,
most automobiles come equipped with standard safety features. Lane departure warning systems or
blind-spot warning systems, which use microcontrollers, sensors, and surveillance systems to send
signals of reflected items ahead, to the side, and the back of the car, could be familiar to you.
Technological advancements and the proliferation of automation measures have contributed significantly
to the popularity of car safety mechanisms. The following are a few examples of available systems:
• Adaptive cruise control (ACC)
These ADAS features rely on either a single front camera or a front stereovision camera. On occasion,
camera data is supplemented with information from other devices, such as light detection and ranging
(LIDAR) or radio detection and range (RADAR). ADAS cameras are mounted inside the vehicle by the
front windshield, behind the central rear-view mirror. To maintain cleanliness of the glass in front of the
camera, the ADAS camera’s field of view is situated in the wiper area. RADAR sensing, visual sensing,
and data fusion are sometimes coupled in a single component. The success of ADAS implementations
depends on life-saving tools, including the most recent interface standards and executing several
algorithms to enable vision co-processing, real-time multimedia, and sensor fusion sub systems. The
umbrella under which ADAS dwells has become more prominent as the accompanying ADAS
technologies are developed and polished, and vehicle makers try to appeal to consumers with an extended
range of safety- and convenience-focused functions.
HISTORY AND EVOLUTION:
The history of ADAS technology can be traced back to the 1950s when the first cruise control system
was invented. It allowed drivers to set a constant speed, making long drives less tiring. In the 1990s,
anti-lock braking systems (ABS) were introduced to prevent skidding and maintain control during hard
braking. In the early 2000s, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was developed to help prevent loss of
control during sudden manoeuvres. Since then, ADAS technology has evolved rapidly, and today, it
includes a wide range of features that assist drivers in various driving scenarios.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have been in development for several decades, with early
iterations dating back to the 1970s.
• The 1970s – The first ADAS systems were developed in the 1970s and included technologies
such as anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC).
• The 1980s – In the 1980s, research into ADAS technology focused on developing collision
avoidance systems, which used radar sensors to detect obstacles and warn the driver of
potential collisions.
• The 1990s – In the 1990s, car manufacturers began incorporating more advanced ADAS systems
into their vehicles, such as adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane departure warning (LDW)
systems.
• The 2000s – By the 2000s, ADAS technology had become more widespread, with features such
as automatic emergency braking (AEB), blind spot detection (BSD), and rear cross-traffic alert
(RCTA) becoming more common.
• The 2010s – In the 2010s, ADAS technology continued to advance rapidly, with the development
of features such as traffic sign recognition, pedestrian detection, and driver monitoring
systems.
• Today, ADAS technology is an essential component of modern vehicles, with most new cars
equipped with several standard ADAS features. The ongoing development of ADAS
technology is focused on improving safety, convenience, and efficiency, with the ultimate goal
of creating fully autonomous vehicles.
Since 2008, Hitachi has been developing practical applications for stereo-cameras that simultaneously
acquire three-dimensional information and image information using two cameras as sensors for detecting
the external environment in driver assistance systems. Like the human eye, a stereo-camera can calculate
the distance to an object from the disparity between the left and right cameras. A stereo-camera generates
parallax images (distance images) that are turned into three-dimensional information by calculating the
disparity (distance) at each point of the image. From this three-dimensional information, they detect
masses of a certain size as three-dimensional objects. After an object is detected, these cameras use image
processing to identify the three-dimensional object. Currently, Hitachi is developing a next-generation
stereo-camera as an all-in-one system with a wide detection area capable of detecting pedestrians that
run into the street when the car makes a right or left turn at an intersection and capable of detecting
distant vehicles necessary for the adaptive cruise function.
A feature of Hitachi’s stereo-cameras is that they use both stereoscopic vision and AI-based object
identification processing to achieve sensing that has a low processing load and is robust against
environmental changes. In stereoscopic vision, the object is captured in three dimensions by using two
cameras to measure distance. Even objects with unknown shapes or patterns can be detected, making it
possible to detect objects and measure distances even when the entire object is not visible. By utilizing
this characteristic of stereoscopic vision, for example, as shown in (1) of Figure 2, even obstacles whose
shape cannot be identified beforehand, such as a person lying on the road, can be detected without going
through the process of prior learning that is required for monocular cameras. As another example, the
shape and distance of a vehicle can be identified even in a situation where a vehicle that cuts in front of
your car is not entirely visible. These features of Hitachi’s stereo-camera enables stable sensing functions
even in complex driving environments. Automobile systems for sensing of the driving environment have
become more sophisticated with advancements in sensor devices and microcomputer technology and
with the growing needs for assessments that standardize safety functions for driver assistance and for
autonomous driving that reduces the burden on the driver. Figure 1 shows the configuration of the system
for sensing of the driving environment developed by Hitachi. The basic ADAS with functions such as
collision damage mitigation braking, is characterized by its ability to provide inexpensive forward
sensing of the vehicle using a single stereo-camera with a stereoscopic view of a wide area in front of
the vehicle.
Key Components:

ADAS sensors, essential components of advanced driver assistance systems, significantly enhance driver
safety by offering critical insights into the vehicle’s environment. There many different types of ADAS
sensors, ADAS cameras, radar, LiDAR (light detection and ranging), and ultrasonic sensors, each playing
a unique role in monitoring and responding to surrounding conditions. This article will be an in-depth
rundown of all the different types of ADAS sensors, their functionalities, and the benefits they bring to
automotive safety.
Types of ADAS Sensors
1. Camera Sensor:
Cameras are one of the most common types of ADAS sensors used in today’s vehicles and they
come in various forms depending on their function within a system. These ADAS sensors are
crucial for detecting objects in the road, including cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. Additionally,
these ADAS sensors play a vital role in enhancing vehicle safety and navigation by providing
critical visual data that helps support other safety features such as collision avoidance systems
and lane departure warnings. The functionality of ADAS sensors, especially cameras, extends to
more complex tasks like interpreting traffic signs and monitoring blind spots, making them
indispensable in modern automotive safety technologies.
ADAS Cameras are vital for ADAS because they are the main sensory component for most automaker
ADAS systems. Without them, the car would be blind to the world around it.
In fact, many cars now have front-facing camera sensors as a standard feature. Let’s explore the ADAS
camera sensor types. The following ADAS systems all use data from these special cameras:
• adaptive cruise control
• automatic emergency braking
• lane departure warning
• lane keeping assist
• automated headlight high-beam activation and dimming
2. Radar Sensor:
Radar sensors are also commonly used in ADAS systems, usually as part of a collision-avoidance system.
This type of ADAS sensor works by emitting radio waves that reflect off objects and return to the sensor.
The time it takes for the wave to return is used to calculate the object’s distance. This information is then
processed by a computer to create a three-dimensional image of the surrounding area. This type of sensor
is used in many ways, including the following ADAS:
• adaptive cruise control
• blind-spot monitoring
• forward collision warning
• pedestrian detection
Radar sensors are important for ADAS because they can detect objects at a distance and in poor weather
conditions, such as rain or fog. This ADAS sensor is important because the car needs all the information
it can get to make the safest decision possible.
With radar sensors, there are two main types: Front Radar Sensors and Rear Radar Sensors.
Front Radar Sensors are placed at the front of the car, often underneath the grill. These sensors are
important for systems that rely on information coming from the front of the car. Here are a few systems
that use these ADAS sensors:
• Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
• Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
• Traffic Jam Assist (TJA)
• Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
Rear Radar Sensors on the other hand are used in systems that need to be aware of vehicles and objects
that are behind the car. Here are systems that use the ADAS sensors:
• Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)
• Active Lane Change Assist
• Rear Collision Warning
• Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)
3. Lidar Sensor:
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors are like radar in that they use lasers to measure distances.
LiDAR sensors also have the precision and capability to find smaller things. For example, they can also
identify people and irregularities in the terrain. LiDAR sends out billions of light photons every second
to detect non-stationary objects in real-time. It employs a pulsed laser to detect nearby things. With both
camera and radar advantages, LiDAR ADAS sensors are extremely accurate and detailed, yet have a
wide range.
ADAS cameras capture images of the scene. The computer processes these images to identify any objects
in the scene. The computer then uses algorithms to track these objects and determine how far away they
are from the car. This information is used by the ADAS system to make decisions about how to respond,
such as whether to initiate emergency braking or steer away from a potential collision .
ADAS systems rely on cameras to quickly and accurately detect and recognize other vehicles,
pedestrians, obstacles, traffic signs, and lane lines, etc. The information captured by ADAS cameras is
quickly analysed by supporting software and used to trigger a response by the vehicle to improve safety
– such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, driver awake and alert monitoring, blind
spot alerts, etc. Not only are cameras being used to enable ADAS systems, they are key for automakers
racing to implement “eyes off” and “mind off” levels of autonomous driving (SAE autonomous driving
levels 4-5), so the vehicle can see and analyse the world around it when it’s driving itself. The key to
delivering the most reliable camera-based ADAS systems is by using the best cameras available. The
better a camera can detect and recognize the environment, the quicker the software can interpret what it
sees and then initiate the appropriate response to improve safety.
➢ D.C. Motor:
D. C. motors are seldom used in ordinary applications because all electric supply companies furnish
alternating current However, for special applications such as in steel mills, mines and electric trains, it
is advantageous to convert alternating current into direct current in order to use d.c. motors. The reason
is that speed/torque characteristics of d.c. motors are much more superior to that of a.c. motors.
Therefore, it is not surprising to note that for industrial drives, d.c. motors are as popular as 3-phase
induction motors. Like d.c. generators, d.c. motors are also of three types viz., series-wound, shunt-
wound and compoundwound. The use of a particular motor depends upon the mechanical load it has to
drive.
A DC motor is composed of the following main parts:
Armature or Rotor:
The armature of a DC motor is a cylinder of magnetic laminations that are insulated from one another.
The armature is perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder. The armature is a rotating part that rotates on
its axis and is separated from the field coil by an air gap.
Field Coil or Stator:
A DC motor field coil is a non-moving part on which winding is wound to produce a magnetic field.
This electro-magnet has a cylindrical cavity between its poles.
Commutator and Brushes
Commutator:
The commutator of a DC motor is a cylindrical structure that is made of copper segments stacked together
but insulated from each other using mica. The primary function of a commutator is to supply electrical
current to the armature winding.
Brushes:
The brushes of a DC motor are made with graphite and carbon structure. These brushes conduct electric
current from the external circuit to the rotating commutator. Hence, we come to understand that
the commutator and the brush unit are concerned with transmitting the power from the static electrical
circuit to the mechanically rotating region or the rotor.
A magnetic field arises in the air gap when the field coil of the DC motor is energised. The created
magnetic field is in the direction of the radii of the armature. The magnetic field enters the armature from
the North pole side of the field coil and “exits” the armature from the field coil’s South pole side.
Types of DC motor
DC motors have a wide range of applications ranging from electric shavers to automobiles. To cater to
this wide range of applications, they are classified into different types based on the field winding
connections to the armature as:
• Self-Excited DC Motor.
• Separately Excited DC Motor.
➢ Self-Excited DC Motor:
In self-excited DC motors, the field winding is connected either in series or parallel to the armature
winding. Based on this, the self-excited DC motor can further be classified as:
• Shunt wound DC motor
• Series wound DC motor
• Compound wound DC motor

- The system constantly monitors the road ahead using its array of sensors.
- It detects and tracks objects, calculating their distance, speed, and trajectory relative to the vehicle.
2. Risk Assessment:
- The system evaluates the risk of a collision based on the speed and distance of the detected object.
- It uses predefined thresholds, such as the time-to-collision (TTC), to determine the urgency of the
warning.
3. Issuing Warnings:
- If the system determines that a collision is imminent, it activates the warning system.
- Different levels of alerts may be issued depending on the severity of the threat, starting with a mild
warning and escalating to more urgent alerts if the situation worsens.
- *Accident Prevention*: Provides drivers with critical extra seconds to react and avoid a potential
collision.
- *Accident Mitigation*: Reduces the severity of unavoidable collisions by prompting the driver to take
action.
- *Enhanced Driver Awareness*: Keeps drivers attentive and aware of their surroundings, promoting
safer driving habits.
1. City AEB: Designed for low-speed urban environments, focuses on preventing collisions in
stop-and-go traffic and with pedestrians.
2. Inter-Urban AEB: Operates at higher speeds, suitable for highways and rural roads, and
primarily prevents rear-end collisions.
3. Pedestrian AEB: Specifically targets pedestrian detection and applies brakes to avoid collisions
with people crossing the road.
- False Activations: Incorrectly identifying a threat can lead to unnecessary braking, which can
be disruptive.
- Sensor Limitations: Adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain, fog, or snow, can affect
sensor performance.
- Complex Scenarios: Challenges in accurately detecting and responding to complex driving
scenarios involving multiple moving objects.

- Integration of Data: Combines data from multiple sensors to create a comprehensive and

- 3D Mapping: Uses LiDAR and radar data to generate detailed 3D maps of the surroundings,
crucial for path planning and obstacle avoidance in autonomous driving.
- Semantic Mapping: Identifies and labels various elements in the environment, such as road
types, traffic signs, and pedestrian zones.
4. Trajectory Prediction:
- Motion Models: Predict the future positions of moving objects based on their current speed
and direction.
- Behavioral Analysis: Uses historical data and machine learning to predict the likely actions
of other road users, such as vehicles slowing down or pedestrians crossing the street.
5. Decision Making:
- Risk Assessment: Continuously evaluates potential hazards and calculates the risk of
collisions or other dangerous situations.
- Response Planning: Determines the best course of action to mitigate identified risks, such as
applying the brakes, steering adjustments, or issuing warnings to the driver.
