Question 1. Suppose that you are interested in the average weight of primary school
students. In Country A, there are 2000 primary schools (600, 000 students). We have
the sampling frame of these schools. Let x be the average weight of the student in a
school and z be the size of the school (number of students). We have the following
information from a sample of 10 schools

(a) Suggest two methods of estimating the average weight. [2 marks]

(b) Place bounds of error on the two estimations in part (a). [2 marks]

Question 2. A mathematics achievement test was given to 486 students prior to


entering a certain college. From these students, a simple random sample of 10 students
was selected and their progress in calculus observed. Final calculus grades were then
reported, as below. It is known that the average score of achievement test for all 486
students is 𝜇𝑥 = 52.

(a) Using ratio estimation method to estimate 𝜇𝑦 for this population and find an
approximate 95% CI for it. [2 marks]

Question 3. Suppose that you conduct a survey on the eyesight of Form 5 secondary
school students. 120 students are selected by a two-stage cluster sampling method. You
randomly select 10 secondary schools. From each selected school, 12 Form 5 students
are selected randomly. The selected students have undergone eye-sight tests, and the test
result is summarized by a score which is a number ranging from 0 to 10. You obtain
the following data
