2 - QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS ASSIGNMENT

Goals

 Identify characteristics of parabolas (including domain, range, intercepts, vertex, axis of

symmetry, direction of opening)
 Graph parabolas by hand with vertex form/standard form (𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 𝑝) + 𝑞)
 Apply the method “completing the square” by converting the equation from general form
(𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐) to vertex form
 Find equations of quadratic functions when given certain characteristics of parabolas
 Complete all the steps to solve max/min word problems (set up equations, solve equations,
identify vertex, interpret vertex in terms of the situation given)

Special Notes:

1) The correct way to represent a point/coordinate is to include brackets both at the beginning and at
the end of the numbers like (−100, 100).

2) For solutions without brackets, then −100, 100 would imply that 𝑥 (𝑜𝑟 𝑦) = −100 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = 100

3) Axis of symmetry must be the equation of a vertical line in the form of 𝑥 =? ? ? .

4) Information regarding congruent equation can be found under lesson 1 video 3.
5) Whenever the question asks for an “equation”, then the answer must be written in the form of
𝑦 =? ? ? with an equal sign involved.
6) Solving max/min word problems is an extremely important goal. It will be tested in the midterm.
Please learn and practice from the Supplemented Materials if necessary.

3. Find the x and y-intercept(s) of 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 7) + 3. Be sure to justify your answers.

4. Determine the equation of the following parabolas (in the form of 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 𝑝) + 𝑞) by using
the coordinates given. Be sure to show steps and/or explain the thought processes. [2 marks]

5. If the parabola 𝑦 = 𝑥 undergoes the following transformations:
reflected over the x-axis, compressed vertically by a factor of ,
and translated 3 units left and 7 units up, what is its new equation?

6. What is the equation of the parabola with vertex (5, 2) and an x-intercept of 𝑥 = −1 ?

7. Completing the square for this equation: 𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 15𝑥 + 7.

CH. 2 - QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS ASSIGNMENT
8. You are the manager of a donut shop. Presently, you sell your donuts for $2.00 each and every
day you sell 600 donuts. However, you are wondering if you could make a bit more profit by
raising the price slightly. Your marketing research shows that for every $0.10 you raise the price,
you will sell 5 less donuts. What price would result in the most revenue?

Solution: Let x = the number of price increases

solving a quadratic equation. What is the length and width of this rectangle?
