Lab 4 (Windows &Utility Programs)
Part 1: Navigating Windows File Manager
1. Open File Explorer
o Press the Windows key + E on your keyboard to open the File Explorer.
o Observe the File Explorer window layout, including the Navigation Pane (left side),
Address Bar (top), and File Display Area (center).
2. Create Folders and Files
o In the Documents folder, create a new folder named LabAssignment:
▪ Right-click within the Documents folder, select New > Folder, and name it
LabAssignment.
o Open the LabAssignment folder and create two more folders inside it:
▪ Name one Images and the other TextFiles.
3. Create Sample Files
o In the TextFiles folder, create two new text files using Microsoft Word:
▪ Right-click, select New > Text Document, and name the files File1.doc and
File2.doc.
o In the Images folder, create a sample image file by taking a screenshot:
▪ Press Windows key + Shift + S, select an area to capture, and save it as
Screenshot.png in the Images folder.
4. Organize and Move Files
o Move Screenshot.png from Images to Text Files by dragging and dropping or by
cutting and pasting.
o After moving the file, try renaming it to Image1.png:
▪ Right-click the file and select Rename.
5. Copying Files
o Copy File1.doc to the Images folder:
▪ Right-click on File1.doc, select Copy, navigate to the Images folder, and Paste
the file there.
6. Delete a File
o Delete File2.doc in the Text Files folder.
o Confirm that the file was sent to the Recycle Bin by checking the Recycle Bin on the
Desktop.
Part 2: Using File Compression Utility
1. Create a Compressed Folder
o Go to the LabAssignment folder. Select both Images and Text Files folders:
▪ Right-click the selected folders, choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
▪ Name the compressed file LabAssignment.zip.
2. Extract Files from a Compressed Folder

o Right-click LabAssignment.zip and select Extract All.
o Follow the prompts to extract the contents to a new folder named ExtractedFiles in
Documents.
3. Delete the Compressed File
o After extracting, delete LabAssignment.zip from Documents by moving it to the
Recycle Bin.
Part 3: Disk Cleanup
1. Open Disk Cleanup
o Type Disk Cleanup in the Start menu, select it, and choose C: drive.
2. Analyze and Select Files
o Once the scan finishes, select Temporary Files and Recycle Bin for deletion.
o Observe the Total space you gain.
3. Perform Cleanup
o Click OK, confirm by selecting Delete Files, and wait for cleanup to finish.
Part 4: Task Manager
1. Open Task Manager
o Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
2. Explore Tabs
o Processes: View running applications and their resource usage.
o Performance: Observe CPU and Memory usage graphs.
o Startup: Check which programs launch at startup.
3. End an Application
o In Processes, right-click an open application (e.g., web browser) and select End Task.

Part 5: Summary Questions


1. What is the difference between moving a file and copying a file?
2. Why is it useful to compress files?
3. Explain the process of extracting files from a compressed (zipped) folder.
4. How much space did you gain?
5. What is the highest CPU-consuming process?
