Action Research - Application

This action research aims to enhance the teaching of Forces and Motion in Science 9 by integrating the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Strategy and a Contextualized Learning Approach to improve student engagement and understanding. The study employs a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-test assessments, focusing on the effectiveness of these strategies in real-world applications. Findings will be disseminated through presentations and reports, with plans for broader integration into the Science curriculum and teacher training.

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

The teaching of Science, particularly in the topic of Forces and Motion, is

often perceived as abstract and disconnected from students' real-world
experiences. This gap makes it challenging for students to fully grasp
fundamental concepts and apply them effectively. Integrating the Gradual
Release of Responsibility (GRR) Strategy with a Contextualized
Learning Approach into lesson planning addresses this issue by ensuring
that instructional strategies gradually shift from teacher-led to student-
centered learning while connecting lessons to students' daily lives. This
action research aims to enhance instructional planning for Science 9,
focusing on Forces and Motion, to improve students' engagement,
understanding, and application of concepts.

II. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. How does integrating the Gradual Release of Responsibility Strategy in

lesson planning improve the teaching and learning process of Forces
and Motion?

2. How does the Contextualized Learning Approach enhance students’

engagement and understanding of Forces and Motion?

3. What is the combined impact of these strategies on students’ ability to

apply concepts in real-life situations?

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION / INTERVENTION / STRATEGY

The proposed intervention involves modifying the existing DEPED lesson plan
format by integrating the following:

1. Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Strategy: A structured

approach that transitions from teacher-led instruction ("I Do") to guided
practice ("We Do") and ultimately to independent application ("You
Do").

2. Contextualized Learning Approach: Linking lesson content to real-

world scenarios to make learning meaningful and relevant.

The intervention will be embedded in all phases of the DEPED lesson plan
format, ensuring coherence and practical application in Science 9 lessons on
Forces and Motion.

IV. RESEARCH METHOD

a. Research Design
This study employs a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-
test assessments to measure the effectiveness of the integrated strategies.
Classroom observations, formative assessments, teacher and student
feedback will also be used to gather qualitative data.

b. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information

 Participants: 10 Science 9 sections (five as the experimental group

and the other five as the control group).

 Other Data Sources: Teachers' lesson plans, student outputs, and

observation logs.

c. Data Gathering Methods

1. PRE-IMPLEMENTATION STAGE

 Conduct a needs assessment to identify gaps in instructional planning

and student engagement.

 Prepare modified lesson plans incorporating GRR and contextualized

activities.

 Administer a pre-test to establish baseline data on students'

knowledge and skills in Forces and Motion.

2. DURING IMPLEMENTATION STAGE

 Execute the intervention over six weeks, aligning it with the Science 9
curriculum on Forces and Motion.

 Collect data through:

o Classroom observations focusing on the implementation of GRR

phases.

o Formative assessments (quizzes, performance tasks, and

contextual activities).

o Teacher and student journals and feedback forms to capture their

experiences.

3. POST-IMPLEMENTATION STAGE

 Administer a post-test to measure learning gains.

 Conduct focus group discussions with students and teachers to gather

insights on the intervention’s impact.
 Analyze student outputs for evidence of understanding and real-life
application of concepts.

d. Data Analysis Plan

 Use descriptive statistics (mean, percentage) and inferential statistics

(t-test) to analyze pre- and post-test scores.

 Thematic analysis for qualitative data from observations, journals, and

focus group discussions to identify patterns and insights.

V. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS AND REFLECTION

The results will discuss:

1. The improvement in students' understanding of Forces and Motion

based on pre- and post-test scores.

2. The effectiveness of the GRR Strategy in promoting independent

learning.

3. The impact of Contextualized Learning in making concepts more

relatable and applicable to students.

4. Reflection on the strengths, challenges, and areas for improvement in

implementing the integrated strategies.

VI. PLANS FOR DISSEMINATION AND UTILIZATION

1. Dissemination:

o Share findings through a presentation at school learning action

cells (LAC) sessions.

o Prepare a research report to be submitted to the Division Office.

o Publish insights in a local educational journal or newsletter.

2. Utilization:

o Integrate the successful strategies into the Science curriculum

across grade levels.

o Develop training sessions for teachers on implementing GRR and

Contextualized Learning.

o Create a repository of contextualized lesson plans for Forces and

Motion to serve as a reference for other teachers.
