OTHELLO Pre-Read Questions
Please thoughtfully respond to the following questions. Yes or no answers will not be counted; please
make sure you explain the “why” behind your yes or no.
1. What is your personal attitude toward interracial relationships? Do you agree or disagree? Are
you neutral to them? When responding to these questions, consider interracial relationships
that you have witnessed.
2. What do you think that society's view is of interracial relationships?
Additional questions (if you are unable to answer questions two or three, it is OK.):

Part 2:
These are not meant to be “free writings” where you just put pen to paper and write. These are meant
to be focused questions with focused answers. Really think about how you are answering the one you
choose, and answer in at least one five sentence paragraph.
1. One theme of OTHELLO is the deception of appearances. Write about a time you were misled by
appearances.
2. Write about a time when you resented someone receiving an honor, recognition, or prize that
you were hoping to get. How did you feel about that person who received it? How did you feel
about the one or group who chose the other person instead of you?
3. Write about a time when you doubted a friend's loyalty. What made you doubt? What did you
do about the situation? How was the situation resolved?
4. What would you do if you discovered your friend's boyfriend or girlfriend was cheating on
them? Would you tell your friend? Would you keep the information to yourself? Explain your
thinking.
5. Have you gossiped? Why? How did it happen? What are the risks and the benefits of gossiping?
6. Think about reputation. How does one develop a reputation? How is a reputation lost? Once a
reputation is lost can it ever be repaired?
