End-Semester Examination

Fluid Mechanics II (ME 221)

Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Guwahati
Maximum Marks: 60, Duration: 24 hrs

• Your hand written solution to all the problems should be compiled into a single pdf. The name
of the pdf should be your Roll number. Please write your roll no. on each sheet of answers.

• This question paper contains individualised data based on your Roll number.

• For Questions 1-3, the parameters a, b, c, and d are defined as 2nd , 7th , 8th and 9th digits of your
roll number, respectively. For example, if your roll number is 180103123 then (a, b, c, d) = (8,
1, 2, 3).

• For Questions 4-6, R is the last digit of your Roll No., for example if your Roll No. is
180103100 then R = 0 and if your Roll No. is 170103017 then R = 7.

• For air use ρ = 1.23 kg/m3 and ν = 1.5 × 10−5 m2 /s. For water use ρ = 1000 kg/m3 .

• Use π = 3.142, g = 9.81 m/s2 .

• Do your calculations to atleast two fraction digits. Provide your final answer to two fraction
digits. This will avoid any round-off error in your final answer.

1. A gate is (1 − 10 ) m wide and 2.0 m tall and hinged at the bottom. On one side the gate holds
b
back a (1 − 10 ) m deep body of water. On the other side, a (5 + c) cm diameter water jet hits the
gate at a height of (1 + d) m. What jet speed V (in m/s) is required to hold the gate vertical? [10]

2. Air flows in a horizontal cylindrical duct of diameter D = (100 + a) mm. At a section a few
meters from the entrance, the turbulent boundary layer is of thickness δ1 = (5.25 + b) mm, and
the velocity in the inviscid central core is U1 = (12.5 + c) m/s. Farther downstream the boundary
layer is of thickness δ2 = (24+d) mm. The velocity profile in the boundary layer is approximated
well by u/U = (y/δ)1/7 . Find

(a) the velocity, U2 (in m/s), in the inviscid central core at the second section. [5 Marks]
(b) the pressure drop (in Pa) between the two sections. [5 Marks] [10]

3. Air flows isentropically through a converging nozzle into a receiver where the pressure is (250+a)
kPa (abs). If the pressure is (350+b) kPa (abs) and the speed is (150+c) m/s at the nozzle location
d
where the Mach number is (0.5 + 100 ), determine the

(a) Mach number [5 Marks]

(b) and speed (in m/s) [5 Marks]

at the nozzle throat. The ratio of specific heats (k) for air is 1.4 and gas constant (R) is 286.9
J/(Kg.K). [10]

4. A centrifugal water pump, with 15 cm diameter impeller and axial inlet flow, is driven at 1750 R + 1
rpm (R is the last digit of your Roll No.). The impeller vanes are backward-curved (β2 = 65◦ )
and have axial width b2 = 2 cm. For a volume flow rate of 225 m3 /hr determine the theoretical
head rise and power input to the pump.[5+5] [10]

5. Two immiscible fluids are contained between infinite parallel plates. The plates are separated by
distance 2h, and the √two fluid layers are of equal thickness h = 5 mm. The dynamic viscosity
of the upper fluid is R + 1 (R is the last digit of your Roll No.) times that of the lower fluid,
which is µlower = 0.1 N-s/m2 . If the plates are stationary and the applied pressure gradient is −50
kPa/m, find the velocity at the interface. [10]

6. Air moves over a flat plate with a uniform free stream velocity of 10(R + 1)1/3 (R is the last digit
of your Roll No.) m/s. At a position 15 cm away from the front edge of the plate, what is the
boundary layer thickness (in mm)? Use a parabolic velocity profile in the boundary layer. [10]
