1. The white light splits into band of colours when passed through a prism.
(i)The figure shows partial set of colours. Two labels are missing. Write the
missing labels in each blank. [1M]
(ii)Indicate the direction of increasing wavelength for the set of colours by an
arrow. [1M]
(iii)Which property of light is it? [1M]
(iv)What is the name given to the set of colours? [1M]
(v)A ray of red light is passed through the prism, draw the path of light as it
passes through the prism. [2M]
(vi)What property of light is
shown in (v)?
2. Figure shows a partially labelled diagram of electromagnetic spectrum.
(i) Label the missing radiation. [2M]
(ii) Indicate the radiation that has the lowest frequency. In the figure above ring
around the radiation. [1M]
(iii) State two safety precautions when handling sources that emit gamma
radiations. [2M]
(iv) Describe one medical use of radiation A. [1M]
(v) State the type of electromagnetic wave used in mobile phones. [1M]
(vi)State one type of electromagnetic wave that has shorter wavelength than visible
light. [1M]
3. (i)A permanent magnet is made from only one material. Identify and ring the
material for which it is possible to make a permanent magnet. [1M]
(ii)Identify and ring the material which has the best magnetizing and
demagnetizing property. [1M]
(iii) Describe what is meant by the direction of a magnetic field. [2M]
(iv) A student has a permanent bar magnet and two metal bars as shown: [4M]
The student tests bar PQ and bar RS separately. He holds the N pole of the
permanent bar magnet close to each end of each metal bar. Table shows the
results of the tests:
Deduce whether each metal bar is a magnet, an unmagnetised magnetic
material or a non-magnetic material. Give a reason for each of your answers.

(v)Figure shows a plotting compass between the poles of a magnet. Identify the
polarities of A & B. [2M]
polarity of A:
polarity of B:
4. (i)Figure shows a full-size ray diagram showing the formation of an image by a
thin glass lens, determine the focal length of the lens. [1M]
(ii) Circle three items in the list which describe the nature of the image formed. [3M]
enlarged same size diminished
inverted upright real virtual
(iii) State one feature of a virtual image. [1M]
(iv) The refractive index of the transparent solid is 1.3. The light is incident on the
surface of the solid at an angle of incidence of 67°. Calculate the angle of refraction
of the light in the solid. [3M]
(v) Green light of frequency 5.7 X 10 14Hz is travelling in air at a speed of 3.0 X
108m/s. The light is incident on the surface of a transparent solid. Determine the
wavelength of the green light in the transparent solid. [use refractive index of solid
from Qiv) [3M]
5. (i)Figure shows a transverse wave. On the figure, draw a wave which has half
the amplitude and a greater frequency than the wave shown. [2M]
(ii) A train travels along steel rails. A person waiting at a station hears the sound
of the train through the rails before he hears the sound through the air. Explain
why this happens. [1M]
(iii) The speed of sound in the rails is 5800m/ s. Calculate the wavelength of
sound of frequency 1100Hz travelling at this speed. [2M]
(v) Sound waves are longitudinal and electromagnetic waves are transverse.
A sound wave used for a medical examination has a frequency of
1.5MHz.State and explain what type of sound wave this is. [2M]
(vi) The mobile phone produces sound waves. The ring tone of the mobile phone
consists of two musical notes, note A and note B. Note A is louder and is higher in
pitch than note B. Describe the differences between the wave for note B and the
wave for note A. You may draw a figure to show the differences. [2M]
6. (i) Describe what is observed during total internal reflection. [1M]
