Earthquake Resistant

The document discusses Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connections, which were developed in response to brittle fractures observed during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. RBS connections are designed to enhance the seismic performance of steel moment frames by relocating plastic hinges away from beam-column joints, thus improving ductility and protecting connections from excessive stress. Various RBS types, including straight, tapered, and radius cuts, are described, each with specific applications and benefits for stress distribution and fabrication.

NOTES

REDUCED BEAM SECTION

WHY TYPES
The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused unexpected brittle fracture in beam-to column connections of
steel moment resisting frame buildings, and prompted extensive research into the seismic behavior of
steel frames. Various types of beam to-column connections have been proposed and investigated.
Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connections are among the several connection types pre-qualified by
SAC studies (FEMA 2000) for use in new steel moment frames in seismic zone. By cutting off a portion of
the beam flanges at a short distance from the column face, RBS connections may shield the vulnerable
beam-column interface from failure by moving the plastic hinge away from the column face. This
paper discusses the seismic performance of RBS frames.

Properties of steel section

(a) Straight (Trapezoidal) - Cut:
•Description: This type features straight, inclined cuts that create a trapezoidal shape in the beam
flange.
•Use: While less common than circular RBS, it might be used where fabrication simplicity is
prioritized or specific plastic hinge location control is needed.
(b1) Tapered - Cut:
•Description: Similar to the straight cut, but with more complex angled lines, creating a tapered
shape.
•Use: Potentially used for finer control over the plastic hinge formation and stress distribution.
(b2) Tapered - Cut with Filled Edges:
•Description: This is a variation of the tapered cut where the sharp edges are filled or rounded.
•Use: Aims to improve stress distribution and prevent premature cracking that might initiate at

•Protection of Beam-Column Joint: By
moving the plastic hinge away from the

excessive stress and damage.
•Improved Ductility: RBS connections
enhance the ductility of the moment-
resisting frame, allowing it to undergo
larger deformations without failure.
