Algebraic Skills & Rational Expressions – Resource Sheet

Lesson One – Distributive Property Lesson Two – Factoring

• Remember to deal with exponents on brackets by • Common factor first ALWAYS where possible
writing out the bracket the number of times equal to o Factor out GCF from expression/equation
the exponent. o Answer = GCF(quotient)
• Remember when using distributive property – • FULLY FACTOR ALWAYS
everything in the first bracket needs to multiply • Simple Trinomial Factoring:
everything in the second bracket o Trinomial
• You can only multiply two things together at the o a = 1 (coefficient of x2
same time o look for 2 numbers which multiply to “c” and
add to “b”
• Double Distributive Property (hint):
• Differences of Squares:
( + )( + ) =  +  +  + 
o Binomial
• Be careful with your use of brackets o Subtraction
o Both terms square “rootable”
• Decomposition:
o Trinomials
o a≠1
o Remember to look for 2 numbers which multiply
to “a x c” and add to “b”
Lesson Three – Radicals
• Some perfect square numbers:
12 22 32 42 52 62 72 82 92 102 112 122 132 142 152
1 4 9 16 25 36 49 64 81 100 121 144 169 196 225
• Radical to Mixed Radical:
o Look for 2 factors that multiply to the radicand where one of the numbers is a perfect square number
▪ √𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑑 = √𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑓𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑠𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟√𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟
▪ Simplify
• Adding & Subtracting Radicals:
o Radicals with the same radicand can be added and subtracted
▪ √𝑎 + √𝑎 = 2√𝑎
• Multiplying:
o √𝑎 × √𝑏 = √𝑎𝑏
o Integer x integer; radical x radical
• Dividing:
√𝒂 𝒂
o = √𝒃
√𝒃
• Rationalizing the Denominator:
o The denominator of a fraction cannot have a radical
o Multiply the numerator and denominator of the fraction by the radical found in the denominator
• Remember to ALWAYS see if a radical can be simplified by changing into a mixed radical
• Remember – no radicals in the denominators of fractions
Algebraic Skills & Rational Expressions – Resource Sheet

Lesson Four – Simplifying Rational Expressions Lesson Five – Multiplying & Dividing Rational
• Restrictions are values which would make the Expressions
denominator equal zero • Steps:
• Steps: 1. Factor the numerators and denominators
1. Fully factor (if you cannot factor, place brackets around the
2. State restrictions expressions)
3. Simplify, if possible 2. State any restrictions on the variables
3. If dividing, invert the second rational and change
to multiplication
4. State any additional restrictions on the variables
5. Multiply numerators and denominators
6. Simplify the rational expression, if possible
• Multiplying Fractions:
A C AC
o  = , where B  0 and D  0
B D BD
• Dividing Fractions:
E G E H EH
o  =  = ,
F H F G FG
where F  0 , H  0 , and G  0
Lesson Six – Adding & Subtracting Rational Other Things:
Expressions • Watch for copy errors
• Steps: • Did I put my brackets where they should go?
1. Factor the numerators and denominators • Did I show all my work?
2. State any restrictions on the variables • Did a negative sign go missing?
3. Find the lowest common denominator (LCD) • Did I miscalculate something?
4. Add or subtract the numerators, as required • Did I try all the questions to the best of my ability?
5. Simplify the rational expression, if possible • Did I put equal signs in where needed?
• Solving Rational Equations • Did I indicate that my work is continued on another
o Solve for the variable page?
o Hint: get common denominators on ALL • Did I use an eraser when needed?
fractions • If I tried to complete a question more than one way,
did I indicate which part of my work my teacher
should mark?
