Distribution
Q-4 The average weight gained by a person over the winter months is uniformly
distributed and ranged from 0 th 30 lbs. Find the probability of a person that he
will gain between 10 and 151 lbs in the winter months.
Q-6 The current (in mA) measured in a piece of copper wire is known to follow a
uniform distribution over the interval 0 , 25 . Write down the formula for the
probabilty density function f (x ) of the random variable X represting the current.
Calculate the mean and variance of the distribution and find the cumulative
distribution function F (x ) .
Q-7 The repair time (in hours) for an industrial machine has a gamma distribution with
mean 1.5 and variance 0.75
(I)Determine the probability that a repair time exceeds 2 hours.
(II)Determine the probability that a repair time is atleast 5 hours given that it
already exceeds 2 hours.
Q-8 Imagine you are solving difficult Maths theorems and you expect to solve one
every half an hour.Compute the probability that you will have to wait between 2
to 4 hours before you solve four of them.
Q-9 The number of days ahead travelers purchase their airline tickets can be modeled
by an exponential distribution with the average amount of time equal to 15
days.Find the probability that a traveler will purchase a ticket fewer than ten days
in advance.
Q-10 On the average, a certain computer part lasts ten years. The length of time the
computer part lasts is exponentially distributed.
(I) What is the probability that a computer part lasts more than 7 years?
(II) On the average, how long would five computer parts lasts if they are used one
after another?
(III) What is the probability that a computer part lasts between nine and 11 years?
Q-12 Find the area under the normal curve in each of the cases:
(I) z 0 and z 1.2
(II) z 0.68 and z 0
(III) z 0.46 and z 2.21
(IV) Right of z 1.28
Q-14 In a sample of 1000 cases, the mean of a certain test is 14 and standard deviation
is 2.5.Assuming the distribution to be normal, find
(I)how many students score between 12 and 15?
(II)how many score below 8?
(III)how many score 16?
Q-15 The mean inside diameter of a sample of 200 washers produced by a machine is
0.0502 cm and the standard deviation is 0.005 cm.The purpose for which these
washers are intended allows a maximum tolerance in the diameter of 0.496 to
0.508 cm,otherwise the washers are considered defective. Determine the
percentage of defective washers produced by the machine, assuming the
diametres are normally distributed.
Q-16 In a normal distribution 31% of the items are under 45 and 8% are over 64. Find
the mean and standard deviation of the distribution.
