Assignment # 01
Question No. 1:
Define and explain the following concepts:
a. Null Hypothesis and Alternative Hypothesis
b. one sided and two-sided test
c. Type 1 error and type 11 errors
d. Acceptance and Rejection Region
e. Significance Level
f. Difference b/w Z and t test?
g. Confidence Interval
Question No. 2:
Explain in detail:
What is statistics and what is the role of statistics in agricultural science?
Question No. 3:
Write the general procedure of hypothesis testing?
Question No. 4:
Twenty plants are randomly selected from the Sun-flower population. The data recorded on days of
flowering are
55, 58, 56, 54, 60, 63, 66, 53, 57, 59, 55, 62, 64, 54, 53, 61, 65, 63, 61, 58
Test that the mean of the sample is less than from an assumed population mean of 58 days?
Question No. 5:
A random sample of 100 recorded deaths in the United States during the past year showed an average life
span of 71.8 years, with a standard deviation of 8.9 years. Does this seem to indicate that the average life
span today is greater than 70 years? Use a 0.05 level of significance.
Question No. 6:
A course in mathematics is taught to 12 students by the conventional classroom procedure. A second group
of 10 students was given the same course by means of programed materials. At the end of the semester the
same examination was given to each group. The 12 students meeting in the classroom made an average
grade of 85 with a standard deviation of 4, while the 10 students using programed materials made an average
of 81 with a standard deviation of 5. Test the hypothesis that the two methods of learning are equal using a
0.10 level of significance. Assume the populations to be approximately normal with equal variances.
Question No. 7:
A new chemical fertilizer, nitro-plus, yielded 20,400 pounds of tomatoes on the average with a standard
deviation of 1200 pounds on 40 randomly selected acres of farmland. On another 100 randomly selected
acres the standard organic fertilizer produced a mean yield of 19,000 pounds with a standard deviation 1000
pounds. At SL=0.01, do the results of the comparison indicate that the chemical fertilizer really produces
larger yields than the organic.
Question No. 8:
Out of 30 banana chips in polyethylene bags, 15 selected at random were given citric acid and the other 15
potassium metabisulphite. After certain period the following data about moisture were recorded. The
interest is to know whether the two treatments have the same effect. (Assume the equal population
variances.)
Sr.No Sample 1 Sample 2

13 14.74 14.97
14 14.99 15.02
15 15.10 15.30

Question No. 9:
Test the hypothesis that the average diameter of the leaves of a tree is 20.4mm. A random sample of 16
leaves were selected and found that mean is 22 mm. The population standard deviation is known is 2mm.
Question No. 10:
An automobile manufacturer claims that his cars consume an average of four gallons of gas for each 100
miles. A consumer organization tested 49 of his cars and found that the mean is 4.15 gallons with standard
deviation of 0.49 gallons for each 100 miles. At 0.01 level of significance do the data provide evidence that
the car really used more than 4 gallons on the average per 100 miles.
Question No. 11:
The coagulation times in seconds for blood drawn from 200 animals randomly allocated to two different
diets were recorded. The number of animals in each treatment is 100. Their means are 66 and 61 seconds
and variances are known to 3.3 and 1 respectively. Is there any evidence of difference between two diets in
the way they affect blood coagulation time?
Question No. 12:
10 individuals are chosen at random from a normal population and the heights are found to be in inches,
63,63,66,67,68,69,70,70,74,71. Discuss the suggestion that the mean height in the population is 66 inches.
Question No. 13:
Following are the heights of plants of two varieties of wheat and the interest is to test whether the two
populations have the same plant height?

Question No. 14:

A factory has a machine that dispenses 80 ml of fluid in a bottle. An employee believes the average amount
of fluid is not 80 ml. using 40 samples, he measures the average amount dispensed by the machine to be 78
ml with a S.D of2.5.
a. State the null and alternative hypothesis.
b. At a 95% confidence interval, is there enough evidence to support the idea that the machine is not
working properly?
Question No. 15:
The scores of students follow a normal distribution. The national mean score is 4.73 with a standard
deviation of1.21. in a particular school,50 students were randomly selected and their means were found to
be 8.41. Test at 5% level of significance, whether average score has increased.
Question No. 16:
An experiment was performed with seven maize plant half of each plant was cover from sunlight
thought out the day for a week, the yield of each plant covered and uncovered part from given as:

Covered 235 785 330 950 810 560 740

Uncovered 786 790 435 925 867 595 680

Test the hypothesis that there is no significant difference between covered and uncovered plants.
