Assignment 1

Course: Cloud Computing (DSE2240) Session: 2024-25 (Even)

Semester: 4th Max. Marks: 10
Date of Issue: 17-02-2025 Last Date for Submission: 25-02-2025
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions for assignment submission:
1. Use A4 white sheet for the assignment (use both sides of page).
2. Write student information such as Name, Registration Number, Section on the top right
corner of each page.
3. Write page numbers.
4. Solve all the questions. Each question carries equal marks.
Questions:
1. What is cloud computing? Discuss different services provided by cloud computing.
2. What are the different cloud deployment models? How do they differ in terms of ownership,
accessibility, security, and scalability? Further discuss the advantages and challenges.
3. What is virtualization, and how does it contribute to cloud computing? Explain the different
characteristics of virtualized environments.
4. What are the different types of virtualizations? How do they enhance resource utilization and
efficiency in computing environments highlighting their benefits.
5. A company uses cloud storage for its media files. Two providers offer the following pricing:
• Provider A: $0.025 per GB for storage, $0.03 per GB for data transfer.
• Provider B: $0.022 per GB for storage, $0.035 per GB for data transfer.
If the company stores 150 TB and transfers 50 TB of data per month, which provider is more
cost-effective, and by how much?
6. A cloud-based SaaS company deploys virtual machines as follows:
• 8 VMs running 24/7, each using 4 vCPUs at $0.08 per vCPU-hour.
• 4 additional VMs during business hours (8 hours/day), each using 2 vCPUs at $0.10 per
vCPU-hour.
Calculate the total monthly cost.
7. A company processes large datasets on a cloud platform. Their job runs for:
• 30 hours per week on 100 vCPUs at $0.15 per vCPU-hour.
• 10 hours per week on 200 vCPUs at $0.12 per vCPU-hour.
What is their total monthly processing cost?
8. A gaming company needs low-latency cloud servers for online multiplayer gaming. Their options:
• US East: $0.18 per request, latency 50ms
• US West: $0.14 per request, latency 70ms
• Europe: $0.12 per request, latency 90ms
If they handle 2 million requests daily and have a budget of $200,000 per month, which
region should they choose to balance cost and latency?
9. A business keeps backups in a cloud-based disaster recovery system with the following setup:
• Primary Storage: 250 TB at $0.018 per GB per month
• Backup Storage: 150 TB at $0.012 per GB per month
• Data Recovery Requests: 75 TB per month at $0.045 per GB
Calculate the total annual cost.
10. A company currently spends $2M per year on on-premise infrastructure. If they migrate to the
cloud, they expect:
• Cloud Cost: $120,000 per month
• Maintenance Savings: 25% of previous infrastructure costs
• Productivity Gain: $300,000 per year
Calculate the Return on Investment (ROI) for cloud migration over 5 years.
