Method 1: Scan for malware
If you haven't scanned your computer for viruses or malw are recently, it is strongly recommended you do so. You can use the Microsoft Safety Scanner to remove malw are from your computer. To do this, follow the steps below : 1. Go to: http://w w w .microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx 2. Click Dow nload Now . Follow the on screen instructions to dow nload and install the Microsoft Safety Scanner. When prompted, save the file to your desktop. 3. After installation, go to your desktop and double click the Microsoft Safety Scanner icon. It may be listed as m sert. 4. Click the box next to Accept all term s of the preceding license agreem ent, then click Next. 5. Click Quick Scan, then click Next. 6. The Microsoft Safety Scanner w ill scan your computer and remove all malw are. 7. Click the Start button, then type Window s Firew all in the Search program s and files box (Window s 7) or in the Start search box (Window s Vista). 8. Click Window s Firew all. 9. In the left hand pane of the Control Panel, click Turn Window s Firew all on or off. 10. Click Turn on Window s Firew all for each netw ork location, then click OK. If you still receive error 0x8007042c w hen attempting to turn on your Window s Firew all, proceed to Method 2.

Method 2: Start the Windows Firewall Services manually.
You can start the Window s Firew all services manually as w ell as make sure it starts automatically in the future. To do this, follow the steps below : 1. Click the Start button, then type Services in the Search box. 2. Right-click Services. Note: there w ill be a cogw heel located next to it. Then click Run as adm inistrator. If prompted, enter your administrator user name and passw ord, then press Enter. 3. Scroll until you see Window s Firew all. Double click Window s Firew all. 4. Click the drop dow n menu next to Startup type, then choose Autom atic. 5. Under Service status, if it is listed as Stopped, click Start. 6. Click Apply, then click OK. 7. Scroll until you see Base Filtering Engine. Double click Base Filtering Engine. 8. Under Service status, if it is listed as Stopped, click Start. 9. Click Apply, then click OK. 10. Restart Window s. Window s Firew all should be enabled. If you still receive error 0x8007042c w hen attempting to turn on your Window s Firew all, proceed to Method 3.

In Notepad, Click File, Save As, and then type Repair.bat in the File nam e box. Click the Save as type dropdow n, then click All Files (*.*). In the left w indow pane, click Desktop, and then click Save. On the File menu, click Exit. From your Desktop, right-click the Repair.bat file that you saved in step 5, and then click Run as adm inistrator.
Im portant If you are prompted for confirmation to stop a service, press the Y key on the kyboard and press the Enter key. 8. Try to start Window s Firew all again. If you can start Window s Firew all, delete the Repair.bat file. To delete the Repair.bat file, right-click Repair.bat, click Delete, and then click Yes. If you still receive error 0x8007042c w hen you attempt to start Window s Firew all, you may w ant to contact support.
