CLASS XII SUBJECT: PHYSICS SESSION 2023-24

ASSIGNMENT-2 TOPIC: Electric Charges & SUB TOPIC: Electric Field &
Field Electric dipole

1. A system has two charges qA = 2.5 × 10–7 C and qB = –2.5 × 10–7 C, located at points A: (0, 0, –15 cm)
and B: (0,0, +15 cm), respectively. What are the total charge and electric dipole moment of the system?

2. An electric dipole with dipole moment 4 × 10–9 C m is aligned at 30° with the direction of a uniform
electric field of magnitude 5 × 104 NC–1. Calculate the magnitude of the torque acting on the dipole.

3. Two point charges qA = 3 μC and qB = –3 μC are located 20 cm apart in vacuum. (a) What is the electric
field at the midpoint O of the line AB joining the two charges? (b) If a negative test charge of magnitude
1.5 × 10–9 C is placed at this point, what is the force experienced by the test charge?

4. Three charges, each equal to q are placed at the three corners of a square of side a. Find the electric field at
the fourth corner.

5. An electric dipole is placed at an angle of 60o with an electric field of magnitude 4 x 105 N/C. It
experiences a torque of 8√3 Nm, If the length of the dipole is 4 cm, determine the magnitude of either
charge of the dipole.

6. Calculate the field due to an electric dipole of length 10 cm and consisting of charges of ±100 μC at a
point 20 cm from each charge.

7. (a) Draw lines of force to represent a uniform electric field.

(b) A positive point charge (+Q) is kept in the vicinity of an uncharged conducting plate. Sketch electric
field lines originating from the point charge on to the surface of the plate.
(c) Figure shows electric lines of force due to point charges q1 and q2 placed in front of each other. Write
the nature of charges?

(d) Figure shows two large metal plates, tightly held against each other and placed between two equal and
unlike point charges perpendicular to the line joining them. (i) What will happen to the plates when they
released? (ii) Draw the pattern of the electric field lines for the system.
