ACTIVITY 02: COMPUTER SOFTWARE

This exercise aims to acquaint you with the various computer software installed on our lab PCs.
You will learn to distinguish between software applications and utilities, comprehend their
functions, and acknowledge their significance in functional computer systems.
Consider the following steps.
1. Ensure your lab PC is powered on and ready for use, restart it
2. Wait for the operating system to reboot and observe the process on the desktop
3. Explore the desktop environment and start the menu
4. Observe and note any software icons, shortcuts, or menu items visible on the desktop or
start menu.
5. Identify and list the names of software applications and utilities you have recognized.
6. Navigate through your computer and interact with the software you identified in (5) above
to determine its purpose and functionality.
7. Identify Software categories such as productivity tools, multimedia applications, system
utilities, internet browsers, and security software.

Q1. Regarding Computer;


a) Define a computer from your understanding of what a computer is.
b) Give reasons why organizations and individuals use computers in their operations.
c) State what could be the use of the following parts of a computer: Monitor,
keyboard, and mouse

Q3. Draw a well–labelled diagram showing the functional units of computer hardware
Q4. What are the five basic computer operations?

b) State two advantages and two disadvantages of using this method of data input

c) Using examples, distinguish between the following computer storage disks;

ii. Fixed and removable.
