Expected learning outcome


 Explain the principles of electrical and diode circuits.
 Apply analytical techniques to solve simple problems of electrical and diode circuits.
 Analyse the functions and applications of electrical machines and diodes.
 Perform independent investigation in an improvised environment.

Guidelines
 Answer Questions 1 - 4 in the assignment. (Question 5 is optional)
 Reasonable calculation steps should be shown clearly to justify the answers.
 Pencils may only be used for drawing, sketching, or graphical work.
 correct all final numeric answers to 3 decimal places and polar form (for complex values).

Submission
 Answer the questions in the answer sheets provided.
 For hardcopy source, answer in the answer sheets provided and scan it using camscanner app to
pdf file (NOT pictures) and submit to the assignment submission link.
 For softcopy source, you may use digital pen to answer in the answer sheets provided and save to
pdf file and submit to the assignment submission link.
 Only pdf file type would be admitted to the assignment submission link.
 The pdf file name should be input by your name such as “Chan Tai Man.pdf”
 The submission deadline is 6:00 pm, May 9 (Saturday), 2020. Any late submission after the
deadline will not be accepted!

Question 1 (30 marks)


The amplitudes of all sources are measured in peak values.
(a) Find all the mesh currents in the circuit in clockwise direction. (20 marks)
(b) Find the complex power of the current source. (6 marks)
(c) Find the average power of the 10 + d8 Ω resistor. (4 marks)

Question 2 (30 marks)


A balanced ∆-∆ system has a phase voltage (VAB) of (3+ d8)45 V and a load impedance of 5 + j10
 per phase. Assume the voltage sources are configured in positive sequence.
(a) Convert the system into the corresponding Y-Y system. Draw the circuit diagrams for both ∆-∆
and Y-Y systems with determining the corresponding values for the sources and loads.

(b) Find all the line currents in the Y-Y system. (10 marks)

Question 3 (25 marks)


The figure below shows an AC circuit with an ideal transformer with a turn ratio of 1:5, find the
voltage V by method of reflecting the secondary circuit to the primary side.

Find the current i, of the 15 Ω by using each of the following diode models.
(a) Ideal diode model. (5 marks)
(b) Offset diode model with offset voltage of 0.7 V. (10 marks)

Question 5 (Optional)
A 250 V series DC motor rotates with speed of 1600 r/min at no load condition when the current is
80 A. It has a field resistance of 0.5 , an armature resistance of 0.8  and a brush drop of 4 V.
Assume the flux is proportional to the current.
(a) Find the induced emf Eb at no load.
(b) Find the speed of the motor in rotation per minute when the input current is 60 A and the supply
voltage is 180 V.
