Phys 210 term 232 Homework 2

Submit by February the 29th at 23:59

Problem 1 [10 marks, 6+4 marks]

Six vector fields are given as

F~1 = sin(z 2 )î + cos(y)ĵ + 2xz cos(z 2 )k̂; F~2 = xyz î + xyz ĵ + xyz k̂; F~3 = yz î + xz ĵ + xy k̂
F~4 = yz (ln(x) + 1) î + xzln(x)ĵ + xyln(x)k̂; F~5 = y 2 z î + 2xyz ĵ + y 2 xk̂; F~6 = xy î + yz ĵ + zxk̂

a. For each vector field in the above, determine if it is conservative or not.

b. For each vector field that is conservative in a, find the corresponding scalar
field.

Problem 2 [10 marks, 2+(3+2+3) marks]

a. Show that if a vector field F~ is both irrotational and solenoidal, then

r2 F~ = 0

Hint: A triple cross-product is useful here.

b. Consider the vector field
1
F~ = p ĵ
x2 + y 2 + z 2

i. Show that r2 F~ = 0.
ii. Show that F~ is neither irrotational nor solenoidal.
iii. Evaluate Z
r(r · F~ ) · k̂ d ,

where the integration is over the area enclosed by a square of vertices

at (0, 0, 2), (0, 1, 2), (1, 0, 2), and (1, 1, 2).

Problem 3 [10 marks, 2.5 marks each]
Express the following functions as a Fourier series:
a. f (t) = sin2 (⇡t/3) + cos2 (⇡t/2)
b. f (t) = | sin(t)|
c. f (t) = |1 t| in the interval [0, 2], which repeats periodically outside this
interval.
d. f (t) = t cos(t) in the interval [0, ⇡/2], which repeats periodically outside this
interval.
