01 a) Write the relationship between the flux, mmf and reluctance. 5

c) A flux density of 1.2 Wb/m2 is required in the airgap of an electromagnet. Length of iron is
0.998 m and of air gap is 2 mm. Calculate:
i) Ampere turns required for iron. ii) Ampere turns required for air gap.
iii) Total ampere turns. iv) Current required.
Take number of turns = 1273 and r = 1500. 10

If a saw cut of 2mm wide is made in the above ring, how many extra ATs are required to

c) The shunt field current in a dc machine is 2 A, and the line current is 20 A at 200 V. Calculate:
i) The generated emf when working as a generator.
ii) Torque in N-m when running at 1500 rpm as motor. Assume Ra = 0.5 . 10

05 a) Explain the process of building-up of voltage in a shunt generator. 6

06 a) Draw torque vs speed characteristics of shunt and series motors. Mention their application. 4

b) Calculate the values of R0, X0, Rt and Xt shown in diagram of Fig 6(b) for the equivalent circuit
of 1, 4 kVA, 200 V/400 V, 50 Hz transformer of which the following are the test results
OC: 200 V, 0.7 A, 70 W on LV side
SC: 15 V, 10 A, 80 W on HV (secondary) side.

c) The Back-to-Back test on two shunt machines gave the following results for full load;
Line voltage 250 V, line current excluding field currents 50 A. Motor armature current 380 A;
field currents 5 A and 4.2 A. Calculate the efficiency of each machine. Ra of each machine

07 a) Explain in detail, the process of separating the hysteresis and eddy current losses from the core
loss of a 1 transformer. 6

b) Two similar 200 kVA, 1 transformers gave the following results when tested by back-to-back
method, W1 in the supply line reads 4 kW; W2 in the secondary series circuit, when full load
current is circulated through the secondaries, 6 kW. Draw the diagram of connections and
calculate the efficiency of each transformer. 10

c) In a transformer, the core loss is 100 W at 40 Hz and 72 W at 30 Hz. Find hysteresis and eddy
current losses at 50 Hz. 4

08 a) A three-phase transformer is connected to 11,000 V supply and takes a line current of 15 A. If
the ratio of turns /ph is 10, calculate secondary line voltage and current, primary and secondary
phase currents and output for the following connections: i) Star-Delta. ii) Star-Star. iii)
Delta-Star. 10

b) A 2200/220 V transformer is rated at 15 kVA as a two winding transformer. It is connected as an


auto transformer with LV winding connected additively in series with HV winding as shown in
Fig. 8(b). The auto transformer is excited from a 2420 V source. The auto transformer is loaded
so that the rated currents of the windings are not exceeded.
Find : i) The current distribution in the windings. ii) kVA output.
iii) kVA transferred conductively and inductively from input to output.
iv) Savings in Cu as compared to 2 winding transformers of the same VA rating.

09 a) Deduce equations for load sharing in kVA when two transformers of equal turn ratio are
connected in parallel. 6

c) A 500 kVA, 33/3.3 kV, 1 transformer with a resistance voltage drop of 1.5% and a reactance
voltage drop of 6% is connected in parallel with another equal rated 500 kVA, 33/3.3 kV, 1
transformer with a resistance voltage drop of 1.6% and reactance voltage drop of 6.2%. Find the
kVA loading and operating pf of each transformer when the load is 1200 kVA at 0.8 pf lag. 10

10 a) Two 1 furnaces A and B are supplied at 100 V by means of Scott connected transformers from
a 3, 6000 V system. The furnace A is supplied from the teaser transformer. Calculate the line
currents on the 3 side when (i) each furnace takes 600 kW at 0.8 pf lag.
(ii) furnace A takes 500 kW at upf and furnace B takes 600 kW at 0.8 pf lag. 12
