BAR GRAPHS

A bar graph is a visual display of data using bars of different heights. This type of display allows us to:
 compare groups of data
 make generalizations about the data quickly

The x-axis represents data groups. The y-axis represents the amounts or
frequency of data groups. It is best to leave gaps between the bars of a bar
graph, so it doesn't look like a histogram.

Special bar graphs include the compound bar graph, the chronological
bar graph and the horizontal bar graph.

1) The graph shows the number of books 58 students bought at a

sale.
a) How many students bought exactly 4 books?
b) What is the median number of books bought by students?
2) The graph shows the number of children, aged 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 who
took part in a survey.
a) What was the modal age?
b) How many children took part in the survey?
3) Jan 2017
The table below shows the number of bananas, to the nearest tonne, produce annually on a farm over a period of 6
years.
Year 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015
Production
150 275 100 40 125 210
(tonnes)

a) Draw a bar chart to represent the

data given in the table above using
a scale of 1cm to represent 1 year
on the x axis, and 1cm to represent
25 tonnes on the y axis. [4]
b) Determine the range of the
number of bananas produced
between 2010 and 2015. [2]
c) i) During which year was there the
greatest production in bananas? [1]
ii) How is this information shown
on the bar chart? [1]
d) i) Between which two consecutive
years was there the greatest
change in the production of
bananas? [1]
ii) How is this information shown
on the bar chart? [1]
e) Give ONE reason why the bar
graph is unsuitable for predicting
the number of bananas produced
in 2016. [1]
LINE GRAPHS
A line graph shows information that is connected in some way, usually how it changes over time. Data points are
connected by straight lines.

1) June 2015
The line below shows the monthly sales, in thousands of dollars, at a car dealership for the period July to November
2015.

a) Complete the table below to show the sales for EACH month. [2]
Month July August September October November
Sale in $Thousands 13 36
b) (i) Between which TWO consecutive months was there the GREATEST increase in sales? [1]
(ii) Between which TWO consecutive months was there the SMALLEST increase in sales? [1]
(iii) What feature of the line graph allows you to infer that the increase in sales between two consecutive months
was the greatest or the smallest? [2]
c) Calculate the mean monthly sales for the period July to November 2014 [2]
d) The TOTAL sales for the period July to December was $130 000.
(i) Calculate the sales, in dollars, for the month of December. [1]
(ii) Complete the line graph to show the sales for December. [2]
2) June 2008 (T&T)
The table shown below gives the population in millions of a country in five- year periods from 1980 to 2005.
Year 1980 1985 1990 1995 2000 2005
Population in
1.10 1.24 1.35 1.76 1.82 2.00
millions
(a) Using a scale of 2cm to represent
0.1 million persons on the
vertical axis and 2cm to
represent five years on the
horizontal axis, draw a line-
graph to represent the
population from 1980 to 2005.
Start your horizontal scale at
1980. [6]
(b) On your graph, show how to
estimate the population of the
country in 1998. Write your
estimated value. [2]
(c) During which five-year period
was there
(i) the greatest increase in
population? [1]
(ii) the smallest increase in
population? [1]
(d) Explain how the two facts about
the population, (c) (i) and (ii), are
shown on your graph. [1]
PIE CHARTS
A pie chart is a circular chart divided into sectors. The size and angle of each sector tells us what fraction of the data
is represented by each result.

1) June 2018
Students in a group were asked to name their favourite sport. Their responses
are shown on the pie chart
i) Calculate the value of x. [1]
ii) What percentage of the students chose cricket? [1]
iii) Given that 40 students chose tennis, calculate the TOTAL number of
students in the group [2]

2) The diagram shows the sports chosen by 160 boys who participated in games evening at their school.
a) The number of boys who chose football is
A) 40 B) 90 C)110 D)150

b) The probability that a boy chosen at random participated in

boxing is
7 1 1 1
A) 8 B) 2 C) 4 D) 8

c) How many boys participated in cricket?

A) 54 B) 60 C) 110 D)120
3) Jan 2019
A survey was conducted among 48 persons to find out what mobile network they used. The table below shows
the results of the survey.

Wire
Mobile Network DigiLec O-Fone Other
Tech
Number of 20 12 10 6
Persons

a) If this information is to be represented on a pie chart, what is the angle for the sector that will represent O-
Fone? [2]

b) Represent the information in the table above on a clearly labelled pie chart. [3]

5. In a survey, all the boys in a Book Club were asked how many books they each read during the
Easter holiday. The results are shown in the bar graph below.

o,

No. ofBooks

(a) Draw a frequency table to represent the data shown in the bar graph. ( 3 marks)

(b) How many boys are there in the Book Club? ( 2 marks)

(c) What is the modal number of books read? ( lmark)

(d) How many books did the boys read during the Easter holiday? ( 2 marks)

(e) Calculate the mean number of books read. ( 2 marks)

(0 what is the probability that a boy chosen at random read THREE oR MQRE books?
( 2 marks)
