Off-load Test
The voltage drop test is essential to ensure the GMDSS batteries are capable of supplying
sufficient power during a failure of the ship's main power supply.
1. Preparation
2. Procedure
- Turn on all essential GMDSS equipment (VHF, MF/HF, Inmarsat, NAVTEX, etc.) while on
battery power only.
- Monitor the battery voltage for at least 15 minutes.
- Record the initial voltage and voltage at 5, 10, and 15 minutes.
- Voltage should not drop below the minimum operational limits:
* For a 12V system: not below 11.0V
* For a 24V system: not below 22.0V
3. Pass/Fail Criteria
- PASS: All GMDSS equipment remains operational, and battery voltage stays above
minimum limits.
- FAIL: Equipment fails to function properly or voltage drops below safe levels.
4. Record Example

Voltage Drop Criteria for GMDSS Battery Test
As per best practice and standard guidelines, the voltage drop during GMDSS testing should
not exceed the following limits:
Procedure:
1. Record the **fully charged battery voltage** before starting the test (no load condition).
2. Switch GMDSS equipment to operate on **battery power only**.
3. Record the voltage **immediately after switching to battery power** and at **5, 10, and
15 minutes**.
4. Calculate the voltage drop from the initial voltage (no-load) to each time interval.
5. The voltage drop must not exceed:
- **1.5V** OR
- **10% of the fully charged voltage**
6. If the drop exceeds either of the above limits, the battery may be considered inadequate
and should be tested further or replaced.
