BUBBLE 1 “Show me the steps”

Hello! Here are the structures and vocabulary to “Show the steps to do a task”
If you need help, you can use this online dictionary

Useful phrases and questions for small talk:

● Good morning
● Good afternoon
● Good evening

● My name is Rachel. I work in HR. And you are?


● “It’s nice to meet you…”
● “It’s a pleasure to meet you…”

Small talk question starters:


● How long have you been working for the company?
● Do you work alone or as part of a team?
● Are you having a busy week?
● What are you working on?
● Tell me about your project?

For instructions in English, use the IMPERATIVE FORM.

Affirmative:
Verb + complement
Finish the report
Close the door, please

Negative:
Verb in the negative + complement
Don’t be late
Don’t say a word

Exhortative imperative: “Let’s” (plural reference=us)


Let’s have a meeting (affirmative)
Let’s not increase prices (negative)

For emphasis, add the auxiliary: “Do come and visit us next week” (an insisting tone)

CONNECTORS: SO, AND, BUT & BECAUSE

So is used to express consequence. I work remotely. So, I don’t socialize much.


And is used to express addition. She is an accountant and a lawyer.
But is used to express contrast. They work remotely, but they go to the office once a week.

Here is a brief example you can read and follow. After reading, prepare your own
instructions to teach somebody how to do a task.

First, put the coffee here. Then, press it down with this
Next, put this here. After that, just press this button.
And, that’s it. You’re doing well!

Remember to use phrases from the story “A new colleague”

Sample of a Demo: “How to Share a Link with a Client”

“What you need to do first is (open up the client page). Then, (look for the specific item
info that you need to share). Next to the item info, you will see a “+”(plus) icon button.
Click on it like so. It will open a message box window. In that box please, (input the
receiver’s name, email contact, and mini subject like “Item 22 link”.)
After typing everything, (hit the button on the bottom right-hand corner of the box with a
green arrow.) The message box will disappear, which means that you completed your task.”

To paraphrase your point, use these phrases:

● “So, what you’re saying…?”


● “Is that correct?”
● “From what you’ve told/mentioned/shown…”
● “What I understand is…” For instance, “What I understand is that your internet is
slow. Is that right?

Acceptable responses for the question: “Do you have any impediments or blocks?”

stories” If you need help, you can use this online dictionary

So that/ In order to: Use these phrases when giving an explanation or a reason
For example
● We’re going to launch a whole new campaign so that we can spark curiosity with
potential customers.”
● We’re moving into a new market in order to stay ahead of our competition.”
So that is followed by a sentence “... so that we can spark curiosity…”
In order to, is followed by the infinitive: “.... in order to stay ahead of our competition.”
Template of a user story:
As (a customer) I want to (add items to my cart), without the items multiplying.
So that (I can avoid being overcharged).

As (______) I want to (action) So that (sentence)

*with user stories, you get a better idea of how the user feel about the product.
