1) Consider the set 𝐴 = {1,2,3,4,5,6} hence work out the following (4 pts)
a. (142)(235)(2356)−1
b. ((16)(235)(1243)
2) Is the statement [(𝑝 → 𝑞) ∧ ¬𝑝] → ¬ 𝑞 a tautology? Show your work. (3 pts)
3) Is the statement ((𝑟 → 𝑞) ∧ (𝑟 → 𝑝)) → (𝑞 ∨ 𝑝) a rule of inference? Justify your answer. (3 pts)
4) Show without using truth tables that 𝑝 ∨ 𝑞 ≡ ¬𝑝 → 𝑞 (3 pts)
5) Draw the logic gate for the negation of the statement: it is not the case that if the car is red, then it the
dog will not bark (3 pts)
6) Use the truth table to determine if the following statements are logically equivalent: ‘The boy is
smart and an IT student’ and ‘It is not the case that if the boy is an IT student then he is not smart’.
Show the entire work. (5 pts).
7) Use the De Morgan’s laws to determine the negation of the following; (3 pts)
a. It is Friday and the man is not running.
b. I am not empowered, or I have a IT degree.
c. It is not the case that if she does not go to the party then she will not dance.
8) Negate, without using the phrase it is not the case that…., the statement: ‘If the cat is black, he will
not run’. Hence draw the logic gate representing the contrapositive of the statement. (4 pts).
9) Without using the truth tables determine the validity of the argument: 𝑝 → ¬𝑞, 𝑞 ∴ 𝑝 (2pts)
