Aims:
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
- Understand and familiarise themselves with the demonstratives “this”, “these”, “that”, “those”
- To practice usage of the demonstratives
- To use the demonstratives in a sentence
- To be able to differentiate between singular and plural

STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS
I anticipate that the following may cause problems:
- with understanding the task, therefore I created worksheets with images to help them
understand
- If students do not understand the oral commands or the tasks, they will be translated into
Romanian; Difficulty in pronunciation

Competences:

STAGES OF THE LESSON

Activity 1: Warm up ( 3 min.)


Teacher’s activity: Teacher enters the classroom, greets the students and helps them get ready for the
beginning of the lesson. She introduces herself and asks them how they feel.
Students’ activity: they greet the teacher and answer to questions
Class management: whole-class activity
Skills: speaking

Activity 2: Lead in ( 5 min.)

Teacher’s activity: Teacher asks the students to play a game named “Hot potato”. She plays some
music in the background and passes a ball to a student. That student passes the ball to another student
and so on. When the teacher stops the music, the student holding the ball must name a school object.

Skills: speaking, listening
Materials: the ball, the song

Activity 3: Presentation (10 min.)

Teacher’s activity: The teacher shows the ball and asks the SS “What is this?”. The student answers
“This is a ball”. Then, she points to a desk that is far away and asks the students “What is that?” to
show the difference between this and that. Then she asks the SS to take a pencil and repeat after her
“This is a pencil” and to other students’ pencil „That is a pencil”. After this, she takes two balls and
asks the student “What are these?” and then points to the balls that are far away and asks “What are
those?”. The students answer the questions. They are asked to repeat after her ”this”, ”these”, ”that”,
”those” . Then she uses gestures to show the difference between the demonstrative pronouns: this
(singular, close), that (sg, far), these (plural, close), those (plural, far). She writes the title of the lesson
“This, these, that, those” on the board and explains the new topic. Then she draws a ball or balls to
show the distance and then she writes the sentences: “This is a ball.”, “These are balls.”, “That is a
ball.”, “Those are balls.”

Students’ activity: Students listen carefully to what the teacher says, repeat the words; write down
the title, the scheme and the sentences in their notebooks

Materials: objects for presentation, board, notebooks

Activity 4: Guided activity (10 min.)

Teacher’s activity: The teacher divides the class in pairs and gives one colored paper to each pair
having a big circle and a small one on it. The big circle is for the objects that are near (singular or
plural) and the small circle shows the fact that the objects are far away (singular or plural). She draws
the circles on the board as well and gives them one example for each circle. She also gives an envelope
to each group with 8 words written in two different sizes. If the word is small they have to stick it in
the little circle and if it is big they have to stick it the big circle. They have to pay attention if the word
is singular or plural. Then they have to write sentences using the given words. The students read the
sentences teacher corrects them if necessary.
Students’ activity: listen to the teacher’s indications, solve the task, read the sentences. (Appendix 1)
Class management: pair work.

Materials: a big sheet of paper, envelopes with some printed words, glue

Activity 5: Practice (5 min)

Teacher’s activity: Teacher asks the students to open their books o page 40 and look at exercise 3.
They have to read and write the sentences in the plural, then they read the sentences. Tthe teacher
corrects the sentences if necessary.
Students’ activity: they solve the task and read the sentences
Class management: individual activity

Materials: books, notebooks

Activity 6: Practice (8 min)

Teacher’s activity: Teacher gives the students worksheets and asks them to look at exercise 2 where
they have to complete the sentences with demonstratives. The teacher corrects the sentences if
necessary. (Appendix 2)

Activity 7: Listening to a song (5 min)

Teacher’s activity: Teacher plays a song called This, These, That and those and gives the lyrics to the
students to play the song together. (Appendix 3)

Activity 8: Feedback and homework ( 3 min) Teacher asks the students to solve an exercise on their
worksheet as homework. She asks students to draw a smiley face as a feedback. She asks them how
they felt during the lesson : happpy, sad or bored.

Students’ activity: solve the tasks and report to the teacher

Materials: coloured paper and pencils

The teacher gives feedback by congratulating the students and encouraging the less talkative ones to
speak more.
