III. METHODOLOGY
The proposed smart waste management system integrates a
range of hardware and software components to optimize waste
collection effectively. At the core of the system is an Arduino
Uno, which acts as the central processing unit, coordinating
various sensors and actuators. The hardware components Fig. 1 Proposed Workflow
include ultrasonic sensors that measure the fill level of waste
bins by emitting sound waves and calculating the time taken for
the echo to return. Additionally, a soil moisture sensor detects
moisture levels in the waste, allowing for classification as either
wet or dry. The gas sensor (MQ4) monitors gas levels,
detecting harmful gases emitted from the waste, ensuring safety
during waste handling. A servo motor is responsible for
opening and closing the bin lid based on the type of waste and
the detected gas levels, while a buzzer alerts users when a bin is
full or if harmful gases are detected. The software component
manages the hardware and processes the data collected from the
sensors, starting with initialization, which sets up the pins for
the sensors, servo motor, and buzzer. The main loop operations
execute several crucial functions, including distance
measurement, soil moisture measurement, gas detection, servo
control, alert activation, and data transmission to the cloud via Fig. 2. Hardware setup
the ESP8266 Wi-Fi module, which facilitates remote
monitoring and sends notifications about bin status and gas
levels. Figure 1 shows the developed hardware setup.
