(1) Define T f (x) = 0 f (y)dy, x ∈ [0, 1] for f ∈ L2 ([0, 1]). Show that there exist no λ ∈ R such
that T ψ = λψ.
(2) Define W = {f : [0, 1] → C : C 2 ([0, 1], BCf (0) = BCf (1) = 0}. Equip W with a norm
such that W is a complete normed space.
(3) Define Df = f ′′ on [0, ∞). Find the eigen functions of D when f ∈ C 2 ([0, ∞))
(4) Let p(a) = p(b) amd Lu = (pu′ )′ + ru, p > 0 with the periodic boundary conditions u(a) =
u(b) and u′ (a) = u′ (b). Show that if u, v be twice ifferentiable functions satisfying the
periodic boundary conditions then (Lu, v) = (u, Lv) and there exists a constant such that
(−Lu, u) ≥ c(u, u).
(5) Show that if f, f ′ ∈ L2 ([0, ∞)) then f is uniformly continuous and |f (x)| → 0 as x → ∞.
(6) Consider Df = f ′′ on [0, ∞ with the condition f (0) = 0, limx→∞ f (x) = 0 and f ′ (0) = 1
and limx→∞ f ′ (x) = 0. Find all the eigen functions of Df with the boundary conditions.

(7) Define T f (x) = R K(x − y)f (y)dy such that R |K(y)|dxdy < ∞. Show that T : Lp (R) →
Lp (R) for all 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞. Let K : R → C a continuous compactly supported function show
that T (B) ⊂ Lp (R) ∩ C(R) where B is the unit ball in Lp (R). Show the same holds when
K ∈ L1 (R) ∩ L∞ (R).
