ASSIGNMENT:

The figures below show the cross sectional view of one of the bays of a steel structure and the plan
view of that structure. The structure has a single floor with a slab. The structure is supported by
multiple columns which are either welded or bolted to the attached beams.
The slab is 250 mm thick and is supported by steel beams and columns as shown below. The floor
finishes are 25 mm thick screed. Assume that all the storage items have an additional dead load of 4
kN/m2 acting on the entire surface area of the slab floor. The floor slab also has an additional
imposed load.
The bearing bolt connections are to be 4.8 class bolts and an E70XX electrode must be used for the
welding. The steel columns should be grade S355JR. Use channel sections for the end columns and
I-section for all other columns and beams.
The roof of the building is cladded with cement tiles. (Neglect wind loading). Assume a suitable
section for the purlins between the trusses.
Make relevant assumptions where necessary and design the following:
1) Columns C1
2) Weld connection for beam-column connections at C1 and C5
3) The steel roof trusses
4) Two bolt connections for truss elements

Make reasonable assumptions for any information not given. (Ignore wind loading & structure
stability, i.e.bracing.)
All steel is to be grade S355JR and all connections to be of ordinary bolts class 4.8 and welds to be
6mm (E70XX).
Provide a brief report explaining the steps you took to plan your design process and any assumptions
made. Truss analysis and all beam column connections must be validated using Prokon.

Assessment Criteria:
• Professionalism of presentation (neatness, terminology, layout) – 5%
• Problem identification – 5%
• Completeness and correctness of load calculations and analysis – 20%
• Completeness and correctness of connection design – 20%
• Completeness and correctness of design of beams and columns – 20%
• Validation of analysis & designs using Prokon – 20%
• Drawings – 5%
• References – 5%
