for the lesson Activity 2: “This is my Throne”
Mechanics:
 The class will be divided into two groups.
 Each group will form a straight line in order for the members to
play freely, and the one who is in front of each line will be the one
to play first.
 To validate your answer, you need to race and immediately sit on
the chair in front and say the magic word “this is my throne” while
holding a crown on top of your head.
 If the member sitting on the chair cannot answer the phrase

D. Discussing new EXPLAIN: (15 minutes)
concepts and practicing Our lesson is all about Solving problems involving probability of
new skills Independent and Dependent events. With that, let us read first our
learning objectives.

Learning Objectives: At the end of 1 hour class discussion and class
activities, the students should be able to achieve the following, with at least
80% level of accuracy and proficiency:
a. differentiate independent and dependent events;
b. solve problems involving independent and dependent events; and
c. demonstrate cooperation in group activity.

Probability – is the likelihood of an event or more than one event

occurring. It represents the possibility of acquiring a certain outcome
and can be calculated using simple formula.
Types of Events
Independent events – the occurrence of one event does not affect the
occurrence of the other.
Example 1:
1. Drawing a card from a deck of cards, returning it, and drawing
another card.
2. Tossing a coin, rolling a die and getting a 6.
3. Attending a singing lesson, raining today.

If two events, A and B, are independent, then probability of both events

occurring is the product of the probability of A and probability B.
P(A and B) = P(A) • P(B)
Example Problem:
1. In a jar, there are 6 violet balls, 5 orange balls, and 4 pink balls.
A ball is drawn, replace, and a second ball is randomly selected.

5
Find the probability of the following events.
a. P(Two violet balls are drawn)

6
Dependent events – the result of one event affects the result of the other
event.
Example 1:
1. Studying hard, getting a high grade.
2. Eating a lot, gaining weight.
3. Drawing a card from a deck of cards and drawing a second card.

If two events, A and B, are dependent, then probability of both events

occurring is the product of the probability of the probability of A and the
probability of B after A occurs.
P(A and B) = P(A) • P(B following A)
Example Problem:
1. A fruit basket contains 7 apples, 4 bananas, 6 guavas, and 3
oranges. Teddy randomly chooses one piece of fruit, eats it, and
chooses another one. Find the probability of the following
events.
a. P(apple, then another apple)
7 6

Scenario: The Mystery box Game

A carnival game features two mystery boxes. Box A contains 3 red

marbles and 2 blue marbles. Box B contains 2 red marbles and 3 blue
marbles.

Group 1: Independent Event

A player draw one marble from Box A and one marble Box B, replacing
the marble in Box A after the first draw.

1. What is the probability of drawing a red marbles from Box A?

2. What is the probability of drawing a blue marbles from Box B?
3. What is the probability of the drawing a red marble from Box A and

9
blue marbles from Box B?

Group 2: Dependent Event

A player draws one marbles from Box A, without replacing it, and then
draws one marble from Box B.

1. What is the probability of drawing a red marble from Box A, then a blue
marbles from Box B?
2. What is the probability of drawing two red marbles (one from each
box)?
Making generalizations GENERALIZATION:
and abstraction  What were the two probability events discussed today?
 How can you differentiate independent events from dependent
events?
 What operation did we used in solving the two type of events?
E. Evaluating Learning EVALUATION: (5 minutes)
1
Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the answer on a sheet of paper.
4
1. Which of the following best describes independent events?
A. The events must occur at the same time.
B. The events must have the same probability.
C. The outcome of one event affects the outcome of another event.
D. The outcome of one event does not affect the outcome of another event.

2. What is the key difference between calculating the probability of independent events versus dependent events?
A. There is no difference; the same formula is used for both.
B. Independent events use addition, while dependent events use multiplication.
C. Independent events use multiplication, while dependent events use conditional probability.
D. Independent events involve only two events, while dependent events involve more than two.

10
3. A bag contains 3 red marbles and 2 blue marbles. You draw one marble, replace it, and then draw another. What is the probability of drawing a
red marble both times?
A. 3/5
B. 9/25
C. 6/25
D. 2/5

4. Two cards are drawn from a standard deck of 52 cards without replacement. What is the probability that both cards are hearts, and explain why
this is a dependent event?
A. 1/17, because the probability of drawing a second heart remains the same.
B. 13/52 ×13/52, because the probability of drawing a second heart remains the same.
C. 1/17, because the probability of drawing a second heart changes after drawing the first.
D. 13/52 × 12/51, because the probability of drawing a second heart changes after drawing the first.

5. A student claims that the probability of rolling a 6 on a fair six-sided die and then flipping heads on a fair coin is the same as the probability of
rolling a 6 on a fair six-sided die and then rolling another 6 on the same die. Is the student correct? Why or why not?
A. Yes, because both scenarios involve two independent events.
B. Yes, because both scenarios involve two events with the same probability.
C. No, because the probability of rolling a 6 twice in a row is lower than rolling a 6 and flipping heads.
D. No, because the second scenario involves dependent events while the first involves independent events.

Answer Key:

1. D
2. C
3. B
4. D
5. C

11
F. Additional activities for EXTEND:
