(Updated) Assignment 1

The document outlines an assignment for a Mathematical Biology course focusing on a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) related to disease dynamics. It includes questions on population assumptions, mean infective periods, disease prevalence, equilibria stability, and the introduction of a latent phase in the model. Instructions for submission and file formatting are also provided, with a due date of April 1, 2021.

MATHEMATICAL BIOLOGY I

ASSIGNMENT 1
(a) State an assumption that guarantees a constant population in the
model.
(b) What is the mean infective period for the model.
(c) What is the prevalence of the disease in the model.
(d) Base on your answer in (a), find the disease-free and endemic
equilibria. Discuss the stability for the disease-free equilibrium.
(e) Add a latent phase (E) of individuals who have been infected but are
not yet infective to the above model and write out the resulting
1
system of differential equations assuming a mean exposed period
δ
(f) Derive the expression for R0 in the model in (e).
