FINAL June 2020

The document outlines the final exam for the Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures course, detailing various questions related to reinforced concrete design principles, including advantages and disadvantages, limit states, and the effects of shrinkage and creep. It includes specific design tasks for reinforced concrete columns and beams, requiring calculations and sketches. The exam is structured into five questions with varying percentages contributing to the total marks.

FINAL EXAM
Assume any missing data reasonably.

For all problems:

fcu = 25 N/mm2 and longitudinal steel reinforcement is 360/520 (for stirrups use steel
240/350). Rmax = 0.194, cmax/d = 0.44, fc=9.5 N/mm2, fs=200 N/mm2

Question (1) (15%, a.1-a.4-a.6-d.7)

a) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using reinforced concrete.
b) Define the modulus of elasticity of concrete according to the Egyptian Code.
c) Explain the different limit states that should be considered when designing a
reinforced concrete structure.
d) Explain how the shrinkage and creep affect the behavior of reinforced concrete
members.
e) What are the assumptions of the flexural theory?
f) Describe using neat sketches the behavior of reinforced concrete beam before
cracking, after cracking before yielding of steel reinforcement, and at the failure
stage.
g) Explain why we should provide longitudinal reinforcement for short columns?
h) Show how the simplified rectangular stress block was derived according to the
Egyptian Code.

Question (2) (10%, b.5-b.7-c.10)

Design a reinforced concrete square tied short column to resist the following loads:
Dead Load=3000 kN and Live Load=500 kN. Draw a neat sketch for the cross section
of the designed column showing the reinforcement details.
Question (3) (25%, a.1-a.4-b.1-b.7-b.5-b.c.5-c.3-d.7)
The given figure shows the main
dimensions and the ultimate loads for a
simply supported reinforced concrete
beam. The cross section dimensions of
the beam are (b=250 mm, h=600 mm,
d=540 mm, slab thickness=120 mm). The
spacing between adjacent beams is 4.0 m.
The beam is subjected to a uniformly
distributed ultimate load (wu=50 kN/m)
and a mid-span ultimate load (Pu=100kN)
as shown in the figure. You are required
to:
a) Design the bottom flexural
reinforcement for the positive bending
moment.
b) Design the web reinforcement using
vertical stirrups only.

Question (4) (25%, a.1-a.4-b.7-b.10-c.3-c.10)

It is required to give full
detailed design for the shown
slabs knowing that the cross
section of the beams are
(b=200 mm, h=600 mm).
Live Load=4kN/m2,Cover=2
kN/m2
Question (5) (25%, a.1-a.4-b.1-b.7-b.10-b.c.5-c.3-c.10)
For the shown reinforced concrete 2 12

rectangular section, calculate the following:

600 mm
a) Cracking Moment 500 mm
b) Service (Working) moment capacity
4 2016
c) Ultimate moment capacity 200 mm

(d’=50 mm)
