Course Outcome
1 Understand Probability concepts.
2 Apply Probability distributions to solve the real life problems.
3 Analyse the real life data using Statistical Methods.
4 Quantify and Model the relationships among variables and decision making in the
Face of uncertainty.

Probability: Experiment- Deterministic and Indeterministic (Random), Sample Space,
Events, Types of Events, Probability as Relative Frequency, Axiomatic Definition of
Probability, Properties of Probability, Additive Property, Conditional Probability,
Independent Events, Multiplicative Law of Probability, Law of Total probability, Bayes’
Rule.

Probability Distribution: Random Variables, Types of Random Variable-Discrete and
Continuous Random Variables, Probability Distribution-Probability Mass Function (pmf)
and Probability Density Function (pdf), Expectation and Variance.
Theoretical Probability Distributions: Discrete - Bernoulli Trials and Binomial
distribution, Geometric distribution and Poisson distribution, Continuous - Uniform
distribution, Normal distribution and Exponential distribution, Applications of These
distributions in real world.

Introduction to Statistics and Analysis of Univariate Data: Definition and Scope of
Statistics, Concepts of statistical population and sample. Data: quantitative and qualitative,
attributes, variables, scales of measurement -nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio. Measures
of Central Tendency: Mathematical and positional. Measures of Dispersion: Range,
Quartile deviation, Variance, Standard deviation, coefficient of variation, Skewness and
Kurtosis-Concepts and their measures,

Analysis of Multivariate Data and Inferential Statistics: Definition, Scatter Diagram,
Simple, Partial and Multiple Correlation (3 variables only), Rank Correlation. Simple
Linear Regression, Principle of Least Squares and Fitting of Polynomials and Exponential
Curves.
Inferential Statistics – Concepts of Hypothesis Testing: Parameter, Statistic, Sampling
Distribution, Standard Error, Hypothesis – Null and Alternative, Errors – Type I and Type
II, Level of Significance, Acceptance and Rejection region, One-Sided and Two-Sided
Hypothesis, Power of Test. Tests of Significance- Z-test, t-test, Chi-square test, F-test and
One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
