FUNCTIONS OF ART

Art Appreciation – Lesson 3


ALAMPAT

“Alampat” is a Visayan term for “art”. It is a simple term yet it


encompasses a very broad scope that life per se is dominated by it.

It demands creativity, artistry, and imagination to produce a piece of art.

“Man utilizes art because it serves human fundamental needs, and


likewise enjoys it.” (Dudley, Faricy, and Rice, 1969)
TELOS

Greek philosopher Aristotle claimed that every


particular substance in the world has an end or
telos in Greek, which translates into “purpose.”

Telos is intricately linked with function.

For a thing to reach its purpose, it also has to fulfill


its function.
FUNCTIONS OF ART

Directly Functional Arts Indirectly Functional Arts

and enjoyment when in contact with the
artwork.
UTILITARIAN FUNCTIONS OF ART

 Art is serving this function when it is utilized to


give comfort, convenience, and happiness to
human beings.

 All the important thing that make man live with


happiness and ease.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONS OF ART

 When the art bridges connection among


people, it serves a social function.

 Art can also depict social conditions such as


photography and performance art like plays
or satires.

 People become more understanding and


sympathetic that would somehow create a
better society.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONS OF ART

 Art is considered to have a social function if


and when it addresses a particular collective
interest as opposed to a personal interest
example is political art.

 Art can also depict social conditions such as

 It may carry emotional overtones that may


solicit action or awareness from their
audience.
CULTURAL FUNCTIONS OF ARTS

 Art serves as an aperture towards skills, knowledge, attitudes,


customs, and traditions of different groups of people.
