Hydraulic Jacking System

22-1.0 GENERAL

For most maintenance procedures, the amount of required lift of a mill

is generally not more than 1/8" to 3/8" (3mm to 10mm). Before
starting the lifting procedure, be sure the trunnion bearing caps have
been removed and the mill is free to raise vertically. This could mean
removal of the feed chute, discharge housing, or other devices that
have close proximity to the mill body.

22-2.0 BLEEDING THE SYSTEM

For proper and smooth jacking operation, the system must be free of
all air before putting into actual operation.

22-2.1 BLEEDING CYLINDERS

The hydraulic cylinders should be received with oil already in them.

To bleed the cylinder, connect all hoses and fully advance and retract
the unloaded cylinder twice. That will assure the cylinder is bled.

22-3.0 PREPARE JACKING SYSTEM

This write-up describes using four jacks. However, under most

maintenance conditions, only two jacks and one cradle are used.

Install jacking cradles under and against mill shell, and hold in place
with cable or come-along.

Move jack into position, center on jacking pads, or soleplate.

Carefully lower the jacking cradles onto the jacks, being sure the
cradle is sitting firmly and squarely on the ram. Move the jacks as
needed to get them lined up with the cradles and mill.

WARNING: Always center the load on the jack. Jack ratings are
based on centered, on-axis loading. Off centered loading
of the ram can cause damage to the cylinder, and
endanger personnel.

22-3.1 INSTALLING HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

When installing the hydraulic hoses, be sure all fittings are clean.
After removing the protective covers, insert hose firmly into coupler,
otherwise the check valves within the couplers will not allow fluid to
flow. Tighten retaining cover, hand tight. Connect the cap and covers
from the couplers together to keep dirt out of the system.

22-3.2 CONNECT HOSES TO JACKS

Move jacking pump assembly to a location where hoses can easily

reach. Avoid undue strain or sharp turns in the hoses. To reduce
confusion at the control manifold, connect the hoses to the pump in
some logical order.

22-4.0 JACKING THE MILL

Be sure all shut-off valves are closed.

Start the jacking pump, open the two shut-off valves, which operate
the jacks at the free-end (away from the gear) of the mill, two full turns
and move the Directional Control Valve to advance. As the cradle
approaches contact with the shell, be sure it is square with the shell,
and that your lift will be equal. Adjust jack positions, if necessary.
When contact is made with the shell, move the Directional Control
Valve handle to center, and close the shut-off valves.

Open the other two shut-off valves to the jacks at the fixed end (with
gear) of the mill 2 full turns and move Directional Control Valve to
advance. Again, as the cradle approaches contact with the shell, be
sure it is square with the shell and that your lift will be equal. Adjust
jack positions, if necessary. When contact is made with the shell,
center the Directional Control Valve.

Open all shut-off valves two full turns, place Directional Control Valve
in the advance position and raise the mill to desired elevation. Note,
the free end will likely reach position first, as it is lighter. You can
adjust its rate of rise by throttling the individual shut-off valves as
necessary. When the mill reaches desired position, center the
Directional Control Valve, shut off pump, and close the individual shut-
off valves.

NOTE: A dial indicator should be positioned near the journal area to

monitor the amount of lift.

22-5.0 LOWERING THE MILL

Open all individual shut-off valves two full turns, and position
Directional Control Valve to the retract position. When mill is again at
rest on its bearings, open the shut-off valves completely to allow the
remaining fluid to drain back into the reservoir by collapsing the jacks
completely.

When completely down, close all shut-off valves and remove hydraulic
hoses. Be sure to replace protective coupling covers. The cradles
and jacks can now be moved away from the shell and stored with the
pump assembly and hoses.

NOTE: The cradles can be stored under the mill, if there is enough clearance
to do it safely. The hydraulic jacks should be stored in a cleaner,
more protected environment.
