OPERATING SYSTEM

An operating system is a software that work as an intermediary between the user and the computer
hardware.

OS provides the environment to execute the program in a convenient & efficient manner.

OS perform basic task such as receiving input from keyboard and display output on the screen.

A computer system can be roughly divided into four components:

 Hardware
 Operating system
 Application program
 User

Various type of OS ARE:

 UNIX
 Ms-DOS
 Ms-Windows
 Mac OS

OS is a software that enable all the program you use.

Characterstics of OS
 OS is a collection of program those are responsible for execution of other program.
 OS is responsible for controlling all the hardware devices those are connected to the system.
 OS is responsible for running all the application software.
 OS is that which provide the communication between the user and the systumm.

Function of Operating system


1. STORAGE MANAGEMENT : OS controls all the storage operation means how the data stored
into the computer and how the data accessed by the user. OS is also responsible for creation
files, directories & reading.
2. PROCESS MANAGEMENT : The process given by the user or the system is also handled by
Operating system.
3. MEMEORY MANAGEMENT : OS also manage the memory of the computer system.
4. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT : OS is also manage all the resources like memory, processor & all
the input/output devices those are attached with the system.
