Assignment I(Simple Bolted Connection)

The document outlines an assignment focused on calculating the strength and efficiency of various bolted connections, including lap joints and butt joints, using specific bolt sizes and grades. It includes multiple scenarios with varying plate thicknesses and load requirements, where calculations must consider factors such as slip resistance and joint design. The assignment requires the application of engineering principles to determine the capacities of different configurations of bolted connections.

Assignment I

(Simple Bolted Connection)

1. Calculate the strength of a 16mm diameter bolt of grade 4.6 for the following cases.
Thickness of main plate is (10+X) mm. [Where X=0.05*Class Roll Number]
a. Lap Joint
b. Single cover butt joint, thickness of cover plate is 8mm.
c. Double cover butt joint, thickness of cover plate is 8mm.
2. A double- bolted double cover butt joint is used to connect two plates which are
(10+X)mm thick. Assuming 20mm dia. bolts of grade 4.6 and cover plate to be 8mm
thick. [X=0.05*Class Roll Number] Calculate strength and efficiency of the joint if
a. 4 bolts are provided at chain bolting (2 no on each line) with 50mm pitch and
30mm edge distance.
b. 4 bolts are provided at Zig-zag bolting (2 no on each line) with 50mm staggered
pitch and 30mm edge distance.
3. A double cover butt joint is used to connect two plates of (8+X)mm[X=0.05*Class
Roll Number] thick. Assuming 16 mm diameter black bolt of grade 4.8, determine
strength and efficiency of joint per pitch. Take pitch length is 50mm. If,
a. 2 bolts on one line are provided at chain bolting.
b. 4 bolts (2 nos on each line) are provided at chain bolting.
4. Find the strength and efficiency of the butt joint as shown in figure. Bolts are 20 mm
dia of grade (4.6+X). [X=0.01*Class Roll Number]

5. Determine the shear capacity of bolts used to connect two plates of thickness (10+X)
mm as shown in fig. [X=0.05*Class Roll Number]
a. Slip resistance is designed at service load
b. Slip resistance is designed at ultimate load

6. The joint use to connect ISF 200*10mm with 12mm thick gusset plate. 4-16mm
diameter of grade [8.8+X] bolts is used to connect the plates. Determine the strength
of joint if a. slip is not permitted, b. slip is permitted. Use chain bolting 2nos on each
line and zig-zag bolting with 2nos in each line. Take Strength of plate 410Mpa,
p=100mm, e=50mm. [X=0.01*Class Roll Number]
7. Calculate the strength and efficiency of joint per pitch to connect 12mm & 8mm thick
plates with double cover butt joint. Take M16 bolt with grade 5.6, thickness of cover
plate is 8mm, edge distance 30mm and Pitch (40+X)mm.[X=0.03*Class Roll
Number]
8. 100 mm × 25 mm two steel plates as shown in fig are spliced by double cover with
[12+X] mm thick plate and 22 mm dia. bolts. Calculate the safe load ‘P’ for the
connection if the bolts used are of property class 4.8 and also determine the efficiency
of the connection. [X=0.05*Class Roll Number]

[150+X]KN. Use 16mm dia black bolts of grade 4.6 and steel having tensile strength
of 410MPa.[X=0.5*Class Roll Number]
10. Two plates of 200*12mm are to be connected by a double cover butt joint with 20mm
diameter bolts and 8mm thick cover plate. The factored tensile force on the plates is
[500+X] KN. Design the bolted connection and arrange to give the maximum
efficiency. [X=0.3*Class Roll Number]
11. An ISA 80*60*8mm carries a service load of [80+X]KN. It is jointed with 12 mm
thick gusset plate. Design a HSFG bolted joint when a. slip is not permitted, b. slip is
permitted. Take Steel is of grade Fe410. [X=0.8*Class Roll Number]
12. 100 mm × 25 mm two steel plates as shown in fig are spliced by double cover with 14
mm thick plate and 22 mm dia. bolts. Design the connection to resist [200+X]KN
design load using the lowest possible number of bolts. [X=0.6*Class Roll Number]
