2 - Introduction To Engineering Software

Electrical engineering software is essential for modeling, documenting, and estimating systems while adhering to industry standards, with examples including MATLAB/Simulink, PSPICE, and ETAP. Simulation plays a critical role by allowing engineers to test and verify circuit designs without physical prototypes, saving time and resources. The process involves modeling circuit elements, using algorithms for analysis, and facilitating design modifications based on simulation results.

Engineering Software

Introduction
Electrical engineering software
 Electrical engineering software are tools used to model,
document, and estimate future systems, or reorganize
current ones while staying in compliance with industry
standards

 Are written for specific applications using principles,

techniques, and formulae specific to that field

 Examples are MATLAB/Simulink, AUTOCAD, PSPICE,

MULTISIM, PROTEUS and ETAP
Cont.. .

1. MATLAB/Simulink: Software often used in electrical

engineering to model, analyze, simulate, and implement
electrical systems

2. PSPICE: Electrical schematic software

3. Multisim & PROTEUS: Circuit simulation and PCB design

software

4. ETAP: An electrical engineering software for power systems

Simulation
 Simulation is process that uses mathematical models to replicate
the behavior of an electronic device or circuit

 It can be used by engineers to model and test electronics before

production

 Simulation software is incredibly accurate and often used in

colleges and universities to teach engineers

 Simulation in electrical engineering involves a variety of types

of simulation
How simulation works

1. Model each element in the circuit in terms of basic building

blocks. These include current and voltage sources, resistors,
capacitors, and inductors

2. Use software algorithms to create and analyze a model of the

electronic circuit

3. Use the algorithms to predict and verify the circuit's behavior and
performance.
Need for circuit simulation
1. We can test the functionality of a circuit without actually building the
circuit

2. Cost efficient, time saving and we can easily design complex circuits
using the software

3. Engineers can reduce the wastage of valuable hardware resources and

proceed to build hardware only after they get satisfactory and accurate
results from simulation

4. We can easily re-design the circuit based on the simulation results. At

each stage of design and simulation, engineers can verify the
performance and compare it to the theoretical responses
Need for circuit simulation
6. Circuit Simulation Software is the starting point of a new concept
or idea. You could also modify existing projects without
designing PCBs

7. Just like physical probing and observing waveforms on an

oscilloscope, we can do the same in circuit simulation. You can
easily probe different points in a circuit and view the virtual
waveforms.
