Why is this course?

Example

DSP is one of the most power full

technology that will shape the science and
engineering in 21st century.

Filter specification:
• Frequencies 60,120 and 180 Hz to be
removed.
• Remove DC drift preserving lowest hart rate
i.e. 30 beats/min or 0.5 Hz. So lower cuttoff
frequency of 0.25 Hz will work.
• Muscle noise may occur at 40 Hz or more.

Why DSP was not before 1960?

The processing of digital discrete signals need

computation in a systematic manner.
In 1970: Microprocessor introduced
1980 some dedicated DSP processors are
developed: cost more

Because of development of VLSI technology

and architectural innovation much powerful
chips are available at affordable price.

We can separate DSP education into three parts:
• Learning general concepts that apply to the field as a whole
(Filtering, FFT)
• Learning specialized techniques for particular area of
interest (Speech processing, Image processing, Rader
signal processing, Biomedical signal processing)
• Implementing DSP algorithm to meet the time constrain.
