LAB MANUAL: COUNTER USING IC 7490

Objective:

1. To understand the working of a decade counter using IC 7490.

2. To implement and analyse a MOD-10 counter.
3. To verify the counting sequence using LEDs.

Apparatus Required:

1. IC 7490 (Decade Counter)

2. Breadboard
3. Connecting Wires
4. Power Supply (5V)
5. LEDs (for output indication)
6. Resistors (for current limiting)
7. Clock Pulse Generator

Theory:

IC 7490 is a 4-bit decade counter that consists of two stages: a divide-by-2 and a divide-by-5
counter. It is widely used in digital clocks, frequency dividers, and event counters. The
counter increments its state on every clock pulse and resets after reaching 10 (MOD-10
operation).

Pin Configuration:

1. VCC(5) – Power Supply (5V)

2. GND(10) – Ground
3. CLK(14) – Clock Input
4. QA, QB, QC, QD – Counter Outputs
5. R1(2), R2(3) – Reset Pins
6. S1(6), S2(7) – Set Pins
Diagram:

Procedure:

1. Connect the circuit as per the schematic diagram.

2. Apply a clock pulse to the clock input (CLK).
3. Observe the LED pattern changing with each clock pulse.
4. The counter will increment from 0000 (0) to 1001 (9) and reset to 0000 (0)
automatically.
5. Verify the sequence with the expected MOD-10 counter output.

Observation Table:

Clock Pulse No. QA QB QC QD Decimal Equivalent

1 0 0 0 1 1
2 0 0 1 0 2
3 0 0 1 1 3
4 0 1 0 0 4
5 0 1 0 1 5
6 0 1 1 0 6
7 0 1 1 1 7
8 1 0 0 0 8
9 1 0 0 1 9
10 0 0 0 0 0 (Reset)
Result: The MOD-10 counter using IC 7490 was successfully implemented and tested. The
observed outputs matched the expected counting sequence.

Conclusion:

1. IC 7490 can be used as a decade counter.

2. It follows a MOD-10 counting sequence, resetting after every 10 pulses.
3. This type of counter is useful for applications requiring frequency division and digital
counting.

Viva Questions:

1. What is the function of IC 7490?

2. Why is IC 7490 called a decade counter?
3. How can we modify IC 7490 to work as a MOD-12 counter?
4. What is the significance of reset pins in IC 7490?
5. Can IC 7490 be cascaded to count higher values?

Further Experimentation:

• Implement a MOD-12 counter using IC 7490.

• Design a frequency divider using multiple counters.
