Handout 2

The document outlines section problems for Math 61CM, focusing on continuity of functions, definitions of left and right continuity, and properties of vector spaces of functions. It includes specific problems related to determining continuity for various functions, finding dimensions of vector spaces, and exploring the implications of the base field on vector spaces. Additionally, it poses a question regarding the number of ordered bases for a specific vector space related to prime numbers.

Section problems for Math 61CM, week 2, 10/04/19

1. Decide for which values of x ∈ R the following functions are continuous, and prove your claim using
the definition of continuity directly.
(a) The function defined by f (x) = x 3 + 12x 2 + 5x + 24.
(b) The function defined by

 1 if x > 0,
f (x) = 0

if x = 0,

 −1 if x < 0.

(c) The function defined by (
sin(1/x) if x , 0,
f (x) =
0 if x = 0.
(You may use properties of sin that you learned in high school [or anywhere else].)
(d) The function defined by (
x sin(1/x) if x , 0,
f (x) =
0 if x = 0.
(You may use properties of sin that you learned in high school [or anywhere else].)
2. Come up with a definition of what it should mean for a function f to be continuous “from the left”
and “from the right” at a point x. Use your definitions to prove that if a function is continuous both
from the left and from the right at a point x, then f is in fact continuous at x.
3. Let N ∈ N and let VN be the vector spaces of functions f : [−π,π] → R of the form
N
Õ N
Õ
f (x) = a0 + an cos(nx) + bn sin(nx).
n=1 n=1

You may use without proof that the set {1,cos,cos(2·),. . .,cos(N·),sin,sin(2·),. . .,sin(N·)} is linearly
independent. (You will learn how to prove this later in the quarter.)
(a) Find the dimension of VN .
(b) Let E N ⊂ VN be the set of functions f which are even, meaning that f (x) = f (−x) for all x ∈
[−π,π]. Find the dimension of E N .
(c) Let O N ⊂ VN be the set of functions f which are odd, meaning that f (x) = − f (−x) for all
x ∈ [−π,π]. Find the dimension of O N .
(d) Compute E N + O N and E N ∩ E N .
4. Some questions about how the base field can be important.
(a) Show that any field F is a vector space over itself. What is its dimension?
(b) Show that R is a vector space over Q, with the usual definitions of addition and scalar multipli-
cation. Is it finite- or infinite-dimensional?
(c) Show that R × R is a vector space over Q, with addition and scalar multiplication coming from
the vector space structure over R. Is R × Q ⊂ R × R a subspace when R × R is considered as a
Q-vector space? As an R-vector space?
5. Let p be a prime number and n ∈ N. How many (ordered) bases are there of Fnp ?
