ASM Question Paper
The document is an ASM question paper consisting of various questions divided into units on estimation, hypothesis testing, and linear models. Each unit contains multiple questions that require students to demonstrate their understanding of statistical concepts and methods. The paper includes practical applications such as calculating estimates, conducting hypothesis tests, and interpreting regression models.
Q1. Unit 1: Estimation (Any 3 out of 5) (4 Marks Each)
1. What is an Interval Estimate? How is it different from a Point Estimate? Give Examples. 2. Explain the difference between biased and unbiased estimators. Can a biased estimator still be useful? 3. Two independent samples are drawn from two normal populations: ● Sample 1: n₁ = 12, X̄₁ = 45, s₁² = 16 ● Sample 2: n₂ = 15, X̄₂ = 50, s₂² = 25 Estimate the difference between the two population means. 4. A researcher wants to estimate the average height of students in a university. She randomly selects a sample of 40 students and finds the sample mean height to be 165 cm with a standard deviation of 8 cm. Provide an interval estimate for the population mean at a 95% confidence level. 5. A machine produces metal rods. The length of rods follows a normal distribution. A sample of 25 rods has a mean length of 12.5 cm and a variance of 4 cm². Find the point estimate for the population variance.
Q2. Unit 2: Hypothesis Testing (Any 3 out of 5) (4 Marks Each)
1. A machine is set to fill packets with 500g of sugar. A sample of 30 packets has an average weight of 495g, with a standard deviation of 10g. Test at a 5% significance level whether the machine underfills the packets. (Use a Z-test) 2. Define null hypothesis (H₀) and alternative hypothesis (H₁) with examples. Explain the p-value approach in hypothesis testing. How is it used to make decisions? 3. When should a Z-test be used instead of a t-test? Explain with examples. 4. Explain the concepts of Type I error and Type II error in hypothesis testing. Explain with real life examples. 5. Two groups of students took the same exam. The first group (30 students) had an average score of 78 with a standard deviation of 10. The second group (25 students) had an average of 74 with a standard deviation of 8. Test whether the mean scores are significantly different using a t-test at α=0.05\alpha = 0.05α=0.05.
Q3. Unit 3: Linear Model (Any 3 out of 5) (4 Marks Each)
1. A dataset contains height (X) and weight (Y) of individuals. A simple linear regression model is fitted as: Y=2.5+0.8X
(a) Interpret the meaning of the intercept and the slope.
(b) Predict the weight when the height is 160 cm. 2. Define multiple linear regression and how it differs from simple regression. 3. Discuss the concept of adjusted R² and how it differs from R². 4. Describe the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method and its role in estimating regression coefficients. 5. Define a Linear Model and explain its components with an example.
Q4. All Units (Any 1 out of 2) (5 Marks)
1. Describe the ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) test and its importance in comparing multiple means. 2. A sample of 50 students was taken to estimate the average marks in an exam. The sample mean was 72 and the sample variance was 64. (a) Find the point estimate for the population mean and variance. (b) If the true population variance is unknown, how would you estimate it?
Q5. All Units (Any 3 out of 5) (3 Marks Each)
1. What are the assumptions required for performing an F-test? 2. Explain the concept of confidence intervals. 3. What properties should a good point estimator have? 4. A sample of 16 values is taken from a normal distribution with unknown variance. What is the critical value of t at 95% confidence level if it is a two-tailed test? 5. A researcher claims that the average height of students in a college is 170 cm. A sample of 25 students has an average height of 168 cm with a standard deviation of 5 cm. Test the claim at a 1% significance level. (T-Test)
