Geeky Bikini - Basic Bikini Top

This is the foundation bikini that you can make in different colours and embellish with your own
geeky themes and designs.

You can watch a video guide on creating this pattern here; https://youtu.be/gC4Gwvx1vnA

● Make this to fit YOUR body. (Or the body of someone you love)
● 100% cotton yarn will hold up well for a ‘novelty’ bikini but it’s not recommended if you
want to wear it as a swimsuit.

Materials:
2×50g balls of 100% cotton 8 ply yarn. Choose a colour that will fit with your theme.
4mm crochet hook.
Yarn needle to sew in ends.

Terminology - US Terms

Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Hdc = Half Double Crochet
Sc2tog = Single Crochet the next two stitches together.

Step 1 - Make the Chest Tie

1. Make a crochet chain long enough to wrap around your chest and tie in a bow at the
back.
2. Break your yarn and pull the thread through the last
stitch.
3. Sew in the ends.

Step 2 - Start the Cup

Row 1: Chain 12
Row 2: HDC in second chain from hook. Hdc in the next 9
stitches. In the last chain, (2HDC, ch1, 2hdc.) Hdc in the 10
stitches down the bottom side of the cup. Ch1. Turn

The (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) space will create the 'peak' of your bikini cup.

1
Step 3 - Make the Cup

Row 3: Hdc 11, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in ch1 space, Hdc12, Ch1 turn

Row 4: Hdc 13, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in ch1 space, Hdc13, ch1, turn.

Row 5: Hdc 14, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in ch1 space, Hdc 15 ch1, turn.

Row 6: Hdc 16, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in ch1 space, Hdc 16 ch1, turn.

Row 7: Hdc 17, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in ch1 space, Hdc 18 ch1, turn.

Row 8: Hdc 19, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in ch1 space, Hdc 19 ch1, turn.

Row 9: Hdc 20, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in ch1 space, Hdc 21 ch1, turn.

Row 10: Hdc22, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in ch1 space, Hdc 22 ch1, turn.

Continue adding additional rows until you reach the desired size.

2
Step 4 - Shape the bottom of the cup.
Start shaping when your cup is at the right size.

Ch1 and turn you work to crochet along the bottom edge of the cup.

Row 1: SC evenly along the bottom edge of the cup. Ch1, turn.
Row 2: *SC3. SC 2 tog,* Repeat from * to * to end of row. Ch1. Turn.
Row 3: *S1, SC 2 tog* repeat from * to * to end of row. Ch1

Don't break the yarn.

Step 5 - Join the Cup to the Chest Tie.

SC over the chest tie into each stitch at the base of the cup.
Don't ever put your hook through the stitches of the chest
tie.

When you are finished you should be able to move the cup
freely along the chest tie.

Break the yarn and sew in the ends. Be careful not to thread
the end through any of the chest tie.

Repeat these steps to create and attach the second cup.

Step 6 - Add Halter-Neck Ties.

In this step we add the halter neck ties to the peak of each
cup.

Join your yarn at the ch1 space at the peak of the cup. Make
a crochet chain long enough that it can comfortably go over
your shoulder and tie in a bow at the back of your neck.

3
Step 6 - Create Cup Number Two and Finish Off
Repeat Steps 2 to 5 to create, shape and join the second cup to the bikini top.

When the second cup is complete, make sure you have sewn in all ends.

Your Bikini top is complete! You can wear the top as-is or embellish it to make a geeky

Colourwork
When creating your Geeky Bikini, make sure the colour of the bikini top you make will fit with the
theme.

Plan it out and perhaps use more than one colour in the bikini. For example, adding a row of a
different colour on the last row can help give the impression of a collar, lapel or undershirt.

Crochet Embellishments
Make eyes, faces, figures and shapes using crochet that you can sew onto the bikini to create
your look.

Embroider
Use embroidery to add lines and texture to the cups in any way you like.

Fabric and Fun

Add fabric or non-yarn embellishments that fit your theme. This might include incorporating
knitting or other craft such as felting!

Cup Sizes
Be mindful of cup sizes - a larger cup is a bigger canvas to work with. When planning your
embellishments, plan their size so that they all fit in proportion to the surface area of the cup.

Different Stitches or Bikini Patterns

Experiment with different types of stitches, or find and use one of the amazing patterns available
online to create your foundation bikini top.

Variations
These variations can be used in place of any element in the main pattern so that you can create
an artwork that is right for you.

Variation: Thicker Halter-Neck Ties

You might like having thicker ties for your halter neck. Consider;
● Creating the chain as per the pattern, but crocheting two strands of thread together.
● Using two or more strands of chain.
● Using one row of single crochet or half-double crochet in place of the crochet chain.
● Using a different material.

Variation: Use Different Material for the Ties

A single chain might not be your preferred way to create the chest or halter neck ties.
Some other materials you could use are;
● Recycled T-Shirt yarn
● Ties from a recycled Bikini
● Create ties from a pool-friendly fabric.

Variation: Front Tie Bikini

Not all of us can reach the centre of our backs to tie a bow!

1. Attach the cups to the chest tie as per the instructions.

2. rather than having the cups at the centre of the chest tie, place them towards the ends.

Variation: No-Tie halter neck.

If you are unable to tie a bow at the back of your neck, you might like to try a no-tie halter neck.
When creating the neck tie, make it long enough to go across the back of your neck and attach
to the top of the other cup. Don't make it too long, or the cup might not sit on your breast
correctly. Keep in mind that the chain will stretch a little bit with wear.
