5.1 Identify Functions AK

This document teaches Grade 8 students how to identify functions by explaining the relationship between inputs and outputs. It introduces key concepts such as relations, ordered pairs, and the vertical line test to determine if a relation is a function. The essential question focuses on understanding what it means for a relationship to be a function, with success criteria for students to assess their understanding.

Essential Question Success criteria

What does it mean for a relationship to be I can... determine whether or not a relation is a function by
a function? notifying the number of outputs assigned to each input.
Identify Functions

Mathematical relation exists when two mathematical values

are related in some way

A relation is any set of ordered pairs.

The input of the relation is the set of x-coordinates.

The output is the set of y-coordinates.
Identify Functions

Relations can be represented as shown

Identify Functions

The relation is a function if each input value is

mapped to exactly one output value.

The relation is not a function if one input value

is mapped to more than one output value.

The relation is a function if each input value
corresponds to exactly one output value.

The relation is not a function if one input value

corresponds to more than one output value.
Identify Functions

The ordered pairs of a relation can be graphed on the coordinate plane.

To determine whether the relation shown on a graph is a function, you can apply the vertical line
test.
Vertical Line Test

If, for each value of x, a vertical line passes through no more than
one point on the graph, then the graph represents a function.

If the line passes through more than one point on the graph, it is not
a function.
