MSM 111- Mathematical Methods I

BACKGROUND
To introduce a sound grounding in Mathematics, underpinning its applications in
Mathematical computation, Engineering, economics and Medical Sciences.

RATIONALE
Communicating mathematical ideas clearly, understanding complex mathematical texts and
working with abstract concepts
AIMS
This course introduces student’s basic concepts of pre-calculus and their applications.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES


At the end of the course the student will be expected to:
 Define basic concepts of set and functions theory,
 demonstrate proficiency in algebra
 demonstrate proficiency in complex numbers and matrices .

1. Introduction to the theory of sets


 Sets Definitions and Notations, Operations on Sets, Laws of Set Algebra, Sets
of Numbers, Binary Operations.
2. Functions, Polynomials and Surds
 Definitions of Functions, Domain and Range, Inverses, graphs of simple
functions, Even and Odd Functions, Logarithm and Exponential Functions and Surds
 Quadratic Functions; completing the square; maximum and minimum values of
quadratic functions and their graphs, Quadratic Inequalities.
 Polynomials of degree 3 and 4, the factor theorem; the remainder theorem;
Polynomial inequalities.
 Mathematical induction, Binomial theorem (and it’s extension), partial fractions
3. Trigonometric Functions
 Circular measure
 Definitions of Trigonometric ratios, Special angles, Sine, cosine, and Area rules
(Recap)
 Graphs of Trigonometric functions.
 Trigonometric identities (Including double angles) and equations involving
trigonometric functions (Including General Solutions).
4. Complex Numbers
 Definitions and Basic Algebraic Operations
 Polar form of a complex number, Modulus and argument of a complex number,
 De-Moivre's theorem and roots of a complex number.
5. Matrices
 Definition and types of Matrices, matrix algebra, system of equations (Cramer’s rule)

MODE OF DELIVERY: 3 lectures and 1 tutorial per week
